Alan Neal Jensen, (74), died on (August 6, 2025) in Colorado Springs, CO. He was with family at home when he went to Heaven to rest with God.
Al was born April 13, 1951 in Sioux Falls, SD to Richard Jensen and Phyllis (Bishop) Jensen. He was the middle child of five children and grew up on a small farm near Hurley, South Dakota. He attended Hurley Elementary and High School, graduating in 1969. He was an avid sports fan and participated in Football, Track and Field and also enjoyed playing American Legion baseball. After high school he went to South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings, SD and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in History in 1973. The highlight of his college education was completing his student teaching at the American School in London, England and touring the British Isles and Gibraltar. He continued his education at SDSU and earned Masters Degree in Educational Administration.
After completing grad school he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the US Air Force, where he served for 22 years. He had many tours of duty, including a favorite, supporting NORAD in North Bay, Canada. Another favorite was a one-year remote off the northern coast of Alaska, where he observed the northern lights by looking south! His final tour of duty was as AWACS Mission Crew Commander out of Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma.
Awards during active duty include Junior Officer of the Quarter, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
After retiring from the Air Force, he worked as a support contractor, before retiring in 2016. A South Dakota farm boy at heart, he and his wife Phyllis enjoyed gardening and planting trees on their small acreage southeast of Colorado Springs. He also enjoyed reading historical novels, daily devotions, and the daily newspaper.
As a member of Pikes Peak Christian Church, he enjoyed volunteering with the custodial staff and made wonderful friendships within the church.
Al is survived by his wife Phyllis Ann Jensen; sons: Brad Jensen (Joy) and Brian Jensen (Annie); his step-children: Havilah Tran (ex-Van Tran), Ben Conklin (Sara), and Joe Conklin (ex-Jaclyn Conklin); his grandchildren: Turner Jensen, Trace Jensen, Daelyn Jensen, Jeff Jimenez, Kyle Shafer, Kailes Tran, Vaughn Tran, Chloe Vidrio, Victor Conklin (Sean), Cathryn St. John (Collin), Carolyn Albee (Drew), Ro Conklin, Juliana Conklin, Raymond Conklin and Kyrie Conklin; and his great-grandchildren: Caitlyn St. John, Marilyn St. John and Benjamin St. John.
