Albert Hazlett Obituary

REMEMBERING OUR SUPER HERO
ALBERT DALE HAZLETT
December 19, 1928 - May 8, 2018
Albert "Dale" Hazlett passed away on May 8, 2018, at the age of 89. He was born December 19, 1928 in Drumright, Oklahoma, the son of Eugene "Gene" Hazlett and Marie (Beers) Hazlett. Following his high school graduation in Marceline, Missouri he proudly served 8 years in the United States Navy. After completing his time in the Navy, he attended college at the University of Northeast Missouri in Kirksville, Missouri. It was there that he met the love of his life, Orpha Ellen "Penny" Sportsman. They were married on February 2, 1952, in Rothville, Missouri. They moved to Rock Island, Illinois, and then Muscatine, Iowa. He worked for the Singer Company and was then transferred to Greeley, Colorado in 1960. After spending a year in Greeley, he was transferred to Colorado Springs where he managed the Singer Store in downtown Colorado Springs on Tejon Street, and later the store relocated to the Citadel Mall. After spending 35 years with The Singer Company, Dale and a partner opened their own store, the Pikes Peak Sewing Center, where he worked for 20 years until he retired.
Dale was a man of many interests. He enjoyed Big Band music, Civil War history, John Wayne movies, sports, good conversation, classic cars, blackberry cobbler, and homemade peanut clusters. He and Penny traveled to 49 of the 50 states, including traveling on part of historic Route 66 in his restored 1954 Oldsmobile, whom he affectionately called "Old Liz."
Dale had a special interest in the Colorado Springs Pioneer's Museum, where he volunteered for many years as a docent. He especially enjoyed giving tours to the many school children who visited the Museum. Dale was always quick to offer a helping hand, an encouraging word, and a genuine smile.
Dale was a beloved son, cherished husband, loving father and proud grandfather, and a loyal friend. He loved his family above all else and never failed to let them know how much he loved each of them.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Penny; three children and their spouses, Patricia and Gerry Sorensen, David and Theresa Hazlett, and Alan and Cherri Hazlett; four grandchildren, Brandon and Julie Anne Sorensen, Brent Sorensen, Dahlton Hazlett, and Jennifer Hazlett; step-grandchildren, Kristin Laman, Mark and Alicia Laman, four great-step-grandchildren, Mellissa Madelyne, Joshua, and Aspen, his sister, Betty Foley; his "adopted son", Lieutenant Colonel Hal Ellis (retired) and many other family members, nieces and nephews, friends, and neighbors. Dale was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. In honoring his wishes, a private service was held for his immediate family.
In Dale's memory, a scholarship fund has been created at the Colorado Springs Pioneer's Museum, to benefit the volunteer Jr. Docents program.

Dale was one of the calmest people I have ever met. He always had a kind word and a sympathetic ear for everyone he encountered. It was my great pleasure and honor to serve hot chocolate and cookies along side of him at the Festival of Lights parade one year. I will miss you Dale. Rest In Peace.
