Albert Stock Obituary

Our beloved father, Albert (Al) E. Stock, age 92, passed away quickly and quietly in his home on August 11, 2016 comforted by his son Matthew and daughter-in-law Noelle. We know he has finally rejoined the love of his life, wife of 57 years and our dear mother Nancy (Nan) Louis (Meyer) Stock (deceased 2004). We were all so proud to call him "Dad" and always thought he was bigger than life.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin October 29, 1923 to Albert Frank and Rose Elizabeth (Rohm) Stock, he had four siblings - Melvin and Paul (deceased), Richard, and Betty (Brendemuehl).

He and Mom stayed busy after he graduated medical school having the five of us: Albert E. (Ned) Stock Jr. (Janet), Incline Village, NV; Mark A. Stock, Montrose, CO; Chris J. Stock (Barbara), Denver, CO; Matthew L. Stock (Noelle), Colorado Springs, CO, and Andrea J. Rogers, Mosier, OR.

His family legacy will continue through his eight grandchildren: Nathan Stock, Lindsey Stock, Kevin Stock, Rose Rogers, Sarah Rogers, Jacob Rogers, Scott Hahn, and Erin Hahn as well as two great-grandchildren Reagan Stock and Avery Posey.

In his big life, he was high school valedictorian in Milwaukee, met our mother at DePauw University, proudly graduated from Saint Louis University Medical School while serving in the Navy and completed his medical training as chief resident at St. Louis City Hospital. He then served in the Army stationed at Fort Carson, CO, was a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and started private medical practice in Colorado Springs in 1955 at the Central Colorado Springs Medical Center. He also served as a consultant to the medical community in the San Luis Valley, then later practiced at the Air Force Academy Hospital until he finally retired after more than 50 years of medical practice. He loved to ski and taught most of us by hiking us and our gear up the "Gun Barrel" run at Monarch. He was a pilot and loved taking us on flights with him. He loved the outdoors and shared this passion by participating in all kinds of outdoor activities with us.

Dad, now that you are with Mom, we know that you two will pick up your golf, tennis, and bridge games again. We love you and will miss you very much! We are not planning a service, but would love to hear from friends and family.

My father-in-law leaves a legacy we will always remember.
His smile emitted love and joy.
His humor filled the room with laughter.
His honesty was refreshing.
His character, passion for medicine, and intentions to make people happy earned him the esteem of his colleagues and the respect of his patients.
His patients from years ago would stop him and say proudly "You were such a good doctor, you took such good care of me." He would jokingly reply "I must have done something right, because you're still here."
His brilliance and humility were perfectly balanced. When complimented on his intellect, he would say "I have everyone fooled."
He loved his country and served in 3 branches of the military.
He made a point of proudly hanging the American flag on his home.
He was stylish and dressed for every occasion.
His will and resolve were inspiring.
His body simply did what bodies do. He aged, to which he would say "This getting old stuff is not for sissies."
His sense of adventure guided him, as he traveled the world with family and friends and flew his private plane.
His independence led him to the very end.

As he left us, Matt and I held his hands, said a prayer, and thanked him for his love. Matt whispered to his Dad "Go see Mom." We weren't ready to say goodbye. We would never have been ready. We're incredibly sad because we miss him. We're incredibly thankful that we have no regrets. We cherished every minute in his presence. I hugged him everyday. I thanked him for being the man my husband emulates.

Matt and I are incredibly grateful that we moved to Colorado one year ago, to be near him and support him after receiving both chemotherapy and radiation for hairy cell lymphoma and lung cancer. Miraculously, he overcame both cancers and refocused his energy on reuniting with his children and grandchildren and great grandchildren.

We love you, Dad. You live on in our hearts and minds.

I will never forget the day I met Dr. Stock. We all had a grand laugh! I knew him for a short time but I saw a man who loved fiercely with grace and compassion, with a little devil thrown in. I am very fortunate to have known him and his family. My life became a little fuller with the love of life he always showed us.
Thank you Doc

I was a former patient of Dr. Stock as well as a Teacher in what was then Junior High to some of the children of Dr. and Mrs. Stock. My wife, Sue, my daughter and I moved to Colorado Springs in 1961 from DeKalb, IL when a climate change was recommended for her worsening asthma condition. We were blessed and fortunate to find a Doctor in Colorado Springs who became an instant help for her asthma problems. Dr. Stock was also my Doctor for both my heart attacks in 1974 and 1978; he gave some great advice and comments on my life's direction which were accepted, well received and are still an ingrained habit! After Dr. Stock moved his practice to the Air Force Academy, the two of us unfortunately were never able to find a Doctor that we were satisfied with elsewhere in the City. Dr. Stock was always very personable, easy to speak with and a wealth of information and direction. My wife, who passed away in 1998 from congestive heart failure due to flu shot complications, and I deeply missed his service and professionalism. It was our privilege to have known such a wonderful, kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable gentleman...he will be greatly missed!

A life well lived gives credit to our Creator who made us in his image Genesis 1:27. It is no small wonder that we thirst for life to realize our dreams and to search for new adventures. One day soon, our Creator will provide an environment in which we no longer cry from the pain of death. My sincere hope for you and your family.

To say the world would be better if all the people were like Dr Al Stock would not be a cliche but a fact. Al had a gift of caring that he shared with me and my family on many occasions as did his sons and daughter. Reflecting the goodness of " THE STOCKS". GOD BE WITH YOU AL.

This man was very true and dear to my heart. I met him almost three years ago when I started working at Liberty Heights. He was funny, sweet, and accepting. Not long after starting at MacKenzie Place, Albert joined us, and I was beyond thrilled. It was then that I got to know his family, and they accepted me as a surrogate grandchild. I will forever love you Albert Stock, my Valentine. I will never forget you or your kind heart.

It is with great sadness that I read about the passing of your Dad. I have so many fond memories of ski trips with you and your parents during ski trips to Monarch and Breckenridge.
Your folks were so nice and such fun loving people. The last time I saw your Dad was at the USAFA hospital. I had just had my second child and was sitting in the waiting room for a well baby check when your dad spotted me and came over to chat. I was amazed that he even remembered me and that he would take the time from his busy schedule to talk with me. Lots of chat about babies and motherhood, but also about you for whom I have so many special memories, especially Mark, Chris and Ned. I hope all of you are sustained during this period of grief with many happy memories of your Dad.

With fond regards

My condolences to the entire Stock family. I worked with Chris at the Salt Lake City V.A. Medical Center and enjoyed every minute of that experience; by reading Dr. Stock's obituary I see in Chris the very traits that made Dr. Stock such a fine person. I imagine each of you has many, many wonderful memories that will comfort you and help you find peace.

Al and Nan were our first friends and colleagues when Al Rapp joined Central Colorado Medical Center in 1960. They introduced us to their friends, their dentist, their dry cleaners and on and on. Our satisfaction with moving to Colorado Springs was increased measurably by their help and friendship in golf, bridge, skiing and flying. Al Rapp was also a pilot and the two Als plus Jack King and Chad Arnold bought a Cessna 182 and formed SARK Aviation (Stock-Arnold-Rapp-King), a harmonious partnership that lasted many years. A running joke was that whenever Al had to come up with his share of expensive airplane repairs, Nan got "matching funds" and redecorated one room of their lovely home. The Rapp children were close in age to the Stocks and were also skiers--great memories of days spent with them at Monarch. Al and Nan were remarkable individuals. Al Rapp and I were privileged to be counted among their friends.

It was with great sadness that I read this morning of the passing of my dear friend Dr. Al Stock. He was truly a great supervisor, a fantastic physician, and a wonderful professor. He was also a better golfer than I, and I'm sorry that we didn't get to play more. I will always remember the quick smile, and twinkle in his eye when greeting each other.

I served with him at the USAF Academy Hospital from August 1982 until my transfer to Florida in December 1994. During our tenure together, Al was a councilor, a strong supporter of my work, a superlative mentor, and a close friend. He nominated me for several awards during our time together. With his support, wisdom, insight, and warm understanding throughout our time together, I developed a strong and successful career in healthcare. He saw to my studies and advised me on a course of intellectual development that saw me complete a second Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration. It was Al's letter of nomination to the Air Force Surgeon General that resulted in my being awarded the first John Solestro Memorial Award for Cardiopulmonary Excellence as The Best Cardiopulmonary Technologist in the US Air Force in 1989. In a great measure, it was Al's encouragement that pushed me to succeed, and become the best in my Air Force career field.

I will have many fond memories of our work together in the USAFA Hospital Cardiopulmonary Diagnostic Lab., the humorous banter, the discussions of the best way to approach saving patients from life-threatening cardiac or pulmonary diagnoses, the long hours and hard work, and the warm feelings at the end-of-the-day, of having done great things. I will miss him tremendously. With deep condolences, I wish you all the fond memories of such a great man that I will carry with me forever.

Respectfully yours;

David L. Root, CMSgt, USAF, Ret.

O.K. No Tears

I believe the next time
I see you will be
in spirit form

I believe you soon will return
To your true love's arms and
be loved as always.

I imagine you will visit me
often
perhaps as a Great
Blue Heron passing overhead..
or in

The unique form of a snowflake
On a calm night, that kisses
my lashes

I will feel your presence
Like I have never
before and will
be comforted
knowing
You love me
always.
