Alexander Mather Obituary

Major Alexander McNair Mather, Jr. (US Army Retired), a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, passed away on August 12, 2008 in Colorado Springs. He was born on January 31, 1945 in Tuscaloosa, AL, a son of the late Alexander Mather and Charlotte Gibson Mather. Al was raised in Tuscaloosa with his mother and grandmother. After graduating from Tuscaloosa HS, he entered the University of Alabama, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Law Degree. Soon after, Al entered active duty in the U.S. Army at Fort Gordon, GA. This was the beginning of a 20-year career, where he worked in the Military Police, CID, and Judge Advocate General. During his service to his country, Al earned many awards and honors. He had many tours, most notably twice to Fort Carson, where he was honorably retired as a Major (0-4). After retirement, he enjoyed working at the UPS Store on Cheyenne Mountain Blvd. He liked golf, hiking, camping, biking, skiing and reading, loved history, and was a big Alabama Crimson Tide fan. Al is survived by his wife, Patricia Mather, and daughters, Sylvia Bylon of Colorado Springs, and Tina (Tom) Reichert of Highlands Ranch, and grandchildren, Devin and Aidan Reichert, and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, August 15, at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 E. Fountain Blvd, Colorado Springs. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, August 16, at the Broadmoor Community Church, 315 Lake Ave, Colorado Springs. A private internment with full military honors will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver.

Each and every day of my life I will remember my uncle. Al was a great example of what "The Best" is in a human being. I have comfort in knowing that he is and will forever remain in our hearts and memories.

From when Al first learned of his illness, he told me "dont worry, everything is going to be O.K." I wanted so much to believe that no harm would ever come to him. He was so protective of me & my sister and didn't want us to feel any pain or sorrow as he always did & I will always be grateful. Thank you for being such a wonderful man & father. I am going to miss you very much.

Tiger, tiger burning bright in the forests of the night, what immortal hand or eye has formed thy fearful symmetry? This poem reminds me of my brother Al. He was a unique human being that God created in a special way. Like the tiger, Al was a fierce believer in what is right and wrong. He always tried to learn about things through reading and clear up those things that were questionable in life. Like the tiger, he burned bright in all of our hearts and could light up a room with his sense of humor. I can still feel the warmth of that light when I think of him. It surrounds me and gives me peace. I also know that Al's light is shinning down on us now.

My Dad, Al, gave our family so many opportunities in life and we will forever be grateful. He opened up his heart to Devin and Aidan and was such a wonderful grandfather. He also established a strong bond with Tom that was very special. We will all remember his fondly and his kind heart will never be forgotten.

I would see Al at the UPS Store several times a week. Even though I have only been in Colorado Springs a few years, Al was one of the nicest and most caring individuals I have met thus far in this entire state. I was very sad to hear of his passing. He will be missed.

Al will be dearly missed by his spouse, Pat, his family, his former Army colleagues, and his many friends.

However, his good humor in the face of adversity, and easy smile no matter what will always be remembered.
