Allan null Obituary

Allan R. Eberhardt, MSgt. Retired USAF

September 20, 1948

February 23, 2022

Al Eberhardt, affectionately known as 'Alpa', 'Big Al', and 'Mr. Gig', passed on surrounded by his loving family members in Pueblo, CO after a brief illness.

He was born in St. Louis, MO to Earl and Eva Eberhardt (Duff). He graduated from Maplewood High School in Maplewood, Missouri in 1966, and received his bachelor's degree in music studies from the University of New Mexico in 1970.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in July 1970. He was stationed at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs with the NORAD Band, and later at the Air Force Academy with the USAFA Band, where he performed with the Moods in Blue, Blue Steel, and led the Brass Quintet. Al retired from the U.S. Air Force in July 1990. Al led his own local band, The Changing Times, which performed regularly at the Broadmoor Tavern and various venues around Colorado. He was known for entertaining audiences by playing two of his trumpets at once. Al produced four albums over the past 25 years, with his final tribute album being Pop-A-Jazz. In addition to performing, he taught private lessons to many students. He was an original member of the Pikes Peak Jazz and Swing Society and the 2010 recipient of their Alice Award. Al served an appointment as artist-in-residence at CSU-Pueblo for 20 years, where he proudly directed the CSU-Pueblo Jazz Band and continued to play with the Changing Times at local venues in Colorado Springs and Pueblo.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and older brother, Dewey. He is survived by his wife, Paula (Malott) of 51 years, and their three children, Eric (Liesl), Emily Batson (Terrence), and Evan (Kristina), as well as three grandchildren, Ella, Brandon, and Jane. Al touched countless lives through his performances as a professional entertainer. He was larger than life, a great storyteller, and loved to share a hearty laugh. He will be greatly missed by his family and his friends, and his musical legacy will survive to herald his spirit.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 11, 2022, at 10am at the Shrine of Remembrance at 1730 E. Fountain Blvd, Colorado Springs, CO 80910. Donations can be made in Al's name to the Pikes Peak Jazz and Swing Society Jazz Education Fund, P.O. Box 6802, Colorado Springs, CO, 80934.

I am so sorry to hear this news. Al was my Trumpet teacher as a Student at Doherty, 1980-1982. He was a great teacher and pushed me along my long musical journey. My prayers and condolences to his family... and I'll have him in mind when I play taps on Memorial day this year.

It´s so easy to keep a person/ musician like Al close to one´s heart and memories. I had the pleasure of playing with Al in the NORAD, AF Academy Bands, and the Jack Tatum combo. Besides the fun of playing music together, Al was always fun to be around, a life energy one thinks of as ever lasting. Al Eberhart will be greatly missed, but his wonderful spirit will always be around.

Paula,

My deepest condolences to you and your family for the loss of such a wonderful man. Al and I played in the band together at UNM including a lot of 10 cent beer nights with the Dixieland Band at Albuquerque Dodgers (Dukes) games.

Al learned I was losing my draft deferment and suggested I come up to the Springs to audition for a tuba spot. He coached me on what to say to assure I got accepted. With my draft number of 22, he steered me in a direction I´ve relished for decades.

My fondest member of Al was when I was unable to play for one of the NORAD Band concerts. I sat in the audience and could spot the beautiful tone he had. It was easy to tell how much he enjoyed himself when playing and he lifted the entire group to be a little better.

Dearest Paula,
My heart is broken. The times I spent with Al as his private lesson student were wonderfully motivational for me. He was not only a gifted musician himself, but also a master diagnostician who could tell what you were doing inside your embouchure by listening.
I will always remember, after a particularly good lesson, he would say: "I hear footsteps!". What a wonderful sense of humor!
God speed my friend.

I'm very sorry to hear of Al's passing. Although I didn't take any trumpet lessons from him, I learned very much from him about trumpet playing and being a good person just by being in his section in the NORAD Band.

Al brought so much joy to so many with his music and fun ways. I well remember the dances we attended and the heightened fun and enjoyment we had from the great music he and his band furnished. He was such a delight to be around. It seemed he was in a perpetual good mood with his constant smiles and laughter. Al will be missed for sure.

Dear Father,

You were larger than life. You followed the sacred calling of music... the melody of the sweet seraph of sound. You gave the heavens the sweetest sounds of trumpets and you filled my heart with joy every single day I was with you. Words truly cannot express how proud I am to be your son. You taught me how to be a husband, a friend, a musician, a teacher, and a force for light in this world. I know you are playing the big gig in the sky now- chasing another melodic dream. This is not the end- the moments we had together in time never really end- they live on. You are always in our hearts, our minds, and our spirits. I love you Dad- your legacy will live on in us: your children, your grandchildren, your students, your bandmates, your fellow trumpeters, and to the untold scores of future musicians you inspired to reach toward their dreams. May you rest in peace- in heavenly harmony.
