Alvah Sulloway Obituary

Alvah W. Sulloway, 90
YORK -- Alvah Woodbury Sulloway, 90, of 1 Victoria Court, York, beloved husband of Sally K. Sulloway, died Nov. 1, 2006.
Born in Concord, N.H., he graduated from St. Paul's School in 1934, Harvard College in 1938, and Harvard Law School in 1941.
A lifelong member of the New Hampshire Bar, he practiced with the firm of Sulloway and Hollis in Concord until joining the Office of Strategic Services during WWII, eventually becoming Chief, Secretariat.
He later joined and became a partner in the law firm of Cummings and Lockwood in Stamford, Conn. He left the practice of law in 1960 to become an English teacher and subsequently, Head of the English Department at Moses Brown School, Providence, R.I.
Retiring to Kittery Point in 1970, he established the Maine Right to Know movement, initiating and winning a case in the York County Superior Court which put an end to secret meetings of the Kittery Town Council. He then helped to reorganize the York Golf and Tennis Club after it was abandoned by the Pinehurst Corporation. Alvah served as the Club's manager for five years.
A lifelong tennis player, Alvah and his father, Frank J. Sulloway, won the National Father and Son Doubles Championship at the Longwood Cricket Club in 1938. He continued to play golf and tennis at the York Golf and Tennis Club where he won the Men's Golf Championship in 1975 and was named Tennis Player of the Year in 1995.
Alvah traveled extensively in Europe and throughout the Mediterranean with his wife of 49 years, Susan S. Sulloway. They produced detailed albums of photos with richly descriptive narratives, revealing Alvah's deep and varied interest in Renaissance art and literature, as well as Greco-Roman history and archeology.
He authored several books. The first, at the age of 26, was Birth Control and Catholic Doctrine. Later in life, he wrote two Sulloway family histories: Put It In Writing and On Their Own. He co-authored a musical play with his first wife, Alison G. Sulloway, which was produced in Concord, N.H., Duxbury, Mass., and the White Barn Theater in Westport, Conn.
He is survived by his wife, Sally; and his four sons: A. Woodbury Sulloway Jr. and his wife Claudia of Morehead City, N.C., Lucien P. Sulloway and his wife Susy of Winterthur, Switzerland, Frank J. Sulloway II of Berkeley, Calif., and S. Estabrook Sulloway and wife Melissa of Bridgton; six grandchildren: Frank R.      A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Kittery Point, 23 Pepperrell Road, Kittery Point.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church's 'Raising the Roof' building fund.
