Alvin Ross Obituary

Col Alvin E. Ross passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at the Pikes Peak Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on September 13, 1917 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He managed a heating and air conditioning company in Mount Pleasant before joining the Army Air Corps, which later became the U.S. Air Force. He was a veteran of WWII flying 34 missions in B-24s and B-17s as a bombardier and navigator. After being discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1946, he worked as an aircraft mechanic at Chanute Air Force Base, Rantoul, Illinois. He was recalled to active duty in 1951. During his career in the nuclear weapons and explosive ordnance disposal career fields in the Air Force, he was stationed in Texas, New Mexico, England, Nebraska, Colorado, and Guam - some on several occasions. He retired from military service in 1970 after 28 years and moved to Colorado Springs where he resided until his death. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth, and by his children Heidelinde (Jim) Burger of Eagan, Minnesota, Kevin Ross of Colorado Springs, and one grandchild, Bowie Burger, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Ross, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His son, Kerry Michael, preceded him in death. Alvin was a much loved person known for his humor, devotion to family and friends, and love of children and animals. He inherited his father's gift of inventiveness and always had a kind word and smile for everyone. Those he touched will never forget him. His memory will live forever in our hearts. A visitation is scheduled from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at Swan Law Funeral Directors. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 11, 2010 at Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 4925 N. Carefree Circle. A reception follows at the Colorado Springs Country Club, 3333 Templeton Gap Road, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

Elizabeth,

I only met Al, my cousin, once at your lovely A-frame home in Colorado Springs in 1973. But our connections were several. He was, at one time, close to my Father and Mother, Leo and Bertha Ross.

Al and I, although we didn't know it at the time, served at Lakenheath RAF and at Walker AFB in New Mexico at the same time.

I have thought of him often over the years although we only met once. I am proud of his service to our country and am sorry that he has passed.

Love from my wife Nancy, our sons David, Gregory and John, and me.

Dear Ross family, my sympathy and prayers to you at the passing of Al Ross. I remember Mr. Ross warmly as my Boy Scout Scoutmaster some 30 years ago. He was well loved by all of us boys with his strong leadership and easy sense of humor. I was fortunate to get to say hello to him again this last fall at Holy Apostles for a scout reunion dinner, and was glad to see his character undiminished. Mr. Ross was a positive influence on so many of us, and is well remembered for his time invested. Regards and Respect, Ray Smalley

Our dear neighbor Al will be greatly missed for his humor and enthusiasm for the big and small things in life. He was a man who was young for his years and consequently made us feel youthful too. He will be missed, admired and always remembered. The Millers
