Amel Murray Obituary

Amel was born in Bedford, Indiana, July 7th 1918; first son of Robert Isaac and Dollie Ellen (Craig) Murray. He passed quietly in the early morning hours on December 16th 2013 in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the age of 95.

After graduating from Bedford High School in June of 1937, he attended The John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the spring of 1942, duty called and he enlisted in the Army Air Corps serving in the Headquarters Squadron 7th Air Force in the Western Pacific Theater. January of 1946, he returned to civilian life and pursued his education. The opportunity to study under Boardman Robinson, whom was teaching at the Bemis Art School, brought him to Colorado Springs.

By the fall of 1946, "Murf" had married and settled in the community where he spent the rest of his life. After continuing his studies and working for Hobbies Stationer as well as other various print shops as an artist and silk screen technician, he began a twenty year career in civil service for the Department of the Air Force. Amel retired August of 1978 from his position as Chief Visual Information Office for the Aerospace Defense command center.

He will be missed dearly by his sister Kathlene of Noblesville, Indiana; daughter Connie (Joseph), granddaughters Angelia (Mark) and Regina, great granddaughters Olympia and Fiona of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nieces Julia, Margaret and Mary Jane and numerous grand and great grand nieces and nephews all in Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert.

A private family memorial was held December 24, 2013. Graveside consecration with military honors at Evergreen Cemetery will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army or the Wounded Warriors Project will honor his memory.
