Anne Sloan Morrison died peacefully on October 7th in the presence of loving family, friends and her standard poodle, who was curled up faithfully on her bed. In 1969, she, her husband James, and their four children moved to Colorado Springs from Connecticut to begin new adventures. In 1978, as the mother of 5 children ranging in age from 4 to 16, she decided to run for the District 12 School Board. To test the political waters, she walked the District, knocking on doors, and introducing herself before dropping off a campaign brochure "Morrison in May" and then popping back into her silver Mazda GLC to go to the next house.
When she was elected to the Cheyenne Mountain School Board in 1979, she received the highest vote-count at that time and was the first woman elected District 12 School Board President two years later. In her 8-year tenure, her focus was to provide teachers with the tools they needed to teach and to foster an inclusive environment for all. In the last year of her life, she was still contributing funds for school supplies to Skyway Elementary School.
She worked at Merry Simmons in the Broadmoor and in later years, she was a caregiver to several elderly patients whom she adored. She also served on the board of the Broadmoor Improvement Society (BIS).
Recently, thirteen stickers on her ancient Toyota Corolla told what Anne Morrison stood for, embracing both George W. Bush and Barack Obama; our local Police Protective Association; a Navaho Native American School; Wounded Warriors, Save the Whales and Earth Day to name a few.
And then, there were her dogs. Over the years, there were the noisy Welsh and West Highland terriers, stoic standard poodles, a floppy collie, a litter of Huskies and a Scottie or two that seemed to get run over.
She created a garden in honor of her mother attracting hummingbirds and doves. She placed a sign there reading ".....One is nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth." Before succumbing to arthritis, she also played tennis.
She reveled in spoiling friends and family with little notes, flowers, and what-nots. Her friendships were a lifelong source of joy-both those whom she had known for decades, and 'new-best-friends' who were often chatty check-out clerks, middle-seat airplane passengers, or in her final months, the caring people at Morningstar-Bear Creek.
She was educated at The Chapin School; Miss Porter's School and Vassar College, where she majored in Art History. Immediately following her graduation from Vassar, she worked in New York City on a children's television program for NBC called the Ding Dong Show and she also modelled for a time with Conover's of New York before marrying and starting a family.
Anne is survived by James Morrison, her husband of sixty-one years and by five children; Mandy Morrison of Baltimore, George Sloan Morrison of Seattle (Miriam), Jameson O'Ryan, of Spokane; Lucy Lincoln Morrison Phillips of London, England (Richard) and Emily Morrison Paroo of British Columbia, Canada (Hanif). Her exuberance lives on in her grandchildren: Ruthie and Evan Morrison, Tallulah Phillips and Kahlil and Noah Paroo. She is also survived by her brother, Frederic Lincoln Rockefeller of New York and countless nieces, nephews, cousins and relations in the Pacific Northwest, Nashville, the East Coast and Europe. Mrs. Morrison was predeceased by her father, George A. Sloan; mother Florence Lincoln Rockefeller Sloan Farr; sisters Florence DeVecchi and Elsie MacMillan and brother William Rockefeller.
Services for friends and family will be held at Broadmoor Community Church on Sunday, October 15th at 2:00 p.m.
