Arlene L. Smith Obituary

Arlene L. Smith, age 86, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1976, and formerly of Pueblo since 1966, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at her home in Colorado Springs. She had retired after working for many years with the U.S. Civil Service. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Arlene Lois Engel was born on January 24, 1927 in Sidney, Nebraska to the late John and Emma (Rhode) Engel. She was a 1945 graduate of Sidney High School. She married Harold Eugene Smith on September 21, 1948 in Gurley, Nebraska. Harold passed away in 1995. She worked for the ASC Office in Sidney, Ent Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, the Chidlaw Building, Fort Carson, NORAD, and after her official retirement worked into her eighties at the El Paso County Courthouse. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Shrine Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed bowling and golfing. She will be best remembered for her love of family. She is survived by her beloved children: Allen (wife, Cathy) Smith of Anchorage, Alaska; Linda (husband, Larry) Thomas of Billings, Montana; Cynthia (and Duane Lutz) Hale of Colorado Springs and John D. (wife, Jeanne) Smith of Colorado Springs. Also surviving are her sisters: Evelyn Cleary of Fort Morgan, Colorado and Harriet Johnson of Limon, Colorado. She has seven wonderful grandchildren: Jennifer Smith, Michael Thomas, Tracie Sander, Douglas Thomas, Mark Smith, Shane Smith and Kellie Zlab. There are fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister: Lorine Beyer and a brother: Edwin Engel. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013 at the First Lutheran Church, Worship Center, 1515 N. Cascade Avenue in Colorado Springs. A reception will follow the services at the church. Private family burial services will take place in July at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney, with her beloved, Harold. Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation. Blessed be her memory. Online Condolences: ShrineOfRemembrance.com
