MSG Lilley and I served together as ODA Team Sergeants in 2nd BN, 7th SFG (A). He was a very special friend and mentor to me. I always knew I could ask him a question and he would provide valuable solutions or recommendations. Throughout my career, I find myself thinking about those candid conversations and how they molded my leadership style and approach. Now I'm assigned to the United States Army Special Operations Command, and each month we conduct Warrior Physical Fitness (PT) with the Commanding General and Command Sergeant Major. This event is to member our fallen heroes. We read the names of those who perished that month. Tomorrow, we will conduct Warrior PT and I will speak to the group about my friend, MSG Art Lilley. I will describe the positive mark he made on me as a teacher and friend. RIP, Brother.

I want to offer my condolences to the family. My son won an award at Smithfield Elementary tonight at his 5th grade banquet. It was the Arthur Lilley award. Created in this man's honor, awarded to students that are not only great students, but are great citizens. I couldn't be any more proud that my son shares the same characteristics of a hero to this entire country! I am honored to have taken part in raising such a good kid! I am so glad that men like this are recognized for their sacrifices and are able to set such a high standard for today's youth!

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Lilley Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

The first time I met Art was when he picked up a group of us from the Airport in Tegulcigalpa, Honduras. We were reservist, arriving for two weeks of training. Arthur treated us all like family, regardless of rank. I appreciated his humor, professionalism and friendship albeit very briefly. It just doesn't seem right that someone full of energy, life and lit every place he went like a permanent sunray would be gone from us. Although it had been almost five years, the pain is as fresh as if it happened yesterday. I am sorry Art, that I did not know you better. Save me a seat on the right side of the Lord, and hopefully, in the very distant future, we will meet again. God bless and keep shining your sunray at us.

I knew Art as we were in the "Q" course together as 18C's. He was a good soldier who loved his work. I was saddened to hear about his death several years ago. Just know that he died with comrades and doing what he desired.

Art was one of the first people I met when the Davis' started bringing me to St. Andrew's with them. He always had a smile on his face and was willing to help in anyway that he could. He was an amazing Christian and always could make you laugh. Heaven's got one amazing angel up there.

My prayers are with you now and always Chris, Mackenzie and Cole.

Art and I served together on a team for several years. He came to our team out of the course and immediately we knew we had a quality man. He had energy and charisma matched by few. It's been a few years and still difficult. Art was a good man, a good Soldier, and truly a special breed of a man. My heart and prayers go out to Chris and the children. Thank you for your service in support of Art. Art will not be forgotten.

I served with Art in Vicenza, Italy. He and I were Co-Team leaders in 3rd Platoon, 3-325 Inf ABCT. SGT Lilley was a true patriot, a fantastic soldiers and a giant among men. Stand tall brother, you are missed. You shall forever be in my heart!

July 6, 2009

I also had the honor of serving with Art Lilley in 3/325 AIR in Italy from 1993 to 1995, he was the first team leader I ever had. I am shocked and saddened to find out about his passing over two years later. He was a great person, whom I will never forget. Hard to believe that no one will ever see that smile of his again, the smile that seemed to be ever present. I must second the thoughts of my teammate Jim Norman, "I can say without a doubt Sgt Lilley was 1 of the best men I ever served with". I vividly remember the love he had for Chris. While we were in JRTC, Art lost his wedding ring someplace, it just slipped off his finger. He was very upset and went for about a week or ten days without finding it. After we had left the FTX area we were cleaning all of our gear at a laundry facility, Art dumped his ruck and shook out all of the contents. There was a loud "ping" as his wedding ring flew across the tile floor. It had slipped off when he had reached into his ruck at some point during the FTX. That is the Art Lilley I will always remember: he cared deeply for his men, his country, and his family. Those who knew him were better off for it, those who didn't missed out on a hell of a man. RIP Art

My thoughts and prayers go out to MSgt Art Lilley and his family. I am a Marine Civil Affairs Reservist who worked with Art in El Salvador in 2000 in support of JTF New Horizons. It was only for 2 weeks, but I have stories for days about the adventures we had. We went on convoys just about every day - Art, myself, and a young Salvadorean Infantryman named "Tyson." I remember the time a Coca-Cola truck backed into our vehicle. The Salvadorean driver tried to flee, but Art climbed up to the window, grabbed him and pulled him out. I'll never forget the look on that Coca-cola driver's face when big Art Lilley pulled him out of the vehicle to "talk" about what happened had just happened.
Every day was an adventure with him!! We got to know each other pretty well. I remember him speaking fondly about his family. He was locked and cocked, and just one squared away soldier. I vividly remember how all the other Salvadorean soldiers were envious of "Tyson" because they all wanted the opportunity to work with Art. He was someone everyone, including myself tried to emulate.
Throughout all my deployments, TDYs, and duty stations, I've met and worked with hundreds, if not thousands of Marines, Soldiers, Seamen, and Airmen. Only a handful really stand out to me as being good leaders, loyal, and squared away. He is definitely one of these men. This is why it hit me pretty hard this weekend, while hanging out at the American Legion in Monterey, CA that Art Lilley was KIA. The least I can do is come here and offer my condolences so that his legacy may live forever.
Semper Fi!!

To Chris Lilley and family: My condolences and prayers are with you. I knew Art and his family in the late 90s while at Bragg. Art was a great soldier, but more then that he was a wonderful husband and father. Although I just recently heard the tragic news of your loss, know that you and your family are in my prayers. May God bless you and your family.

I had the honor of Serving with Art in The 3rd of 325th AIR starting in 1992. It seems like just yesterday that I remember him coming from the 101st and his boyish young looks are still fresh in my mind. Back then we were both Spec 4's in Bravo Company 3rd Platoon 1st squad. Today I discovered that he was killed over a year ago and I only wish I could of been there to pay him the respect that he deserved.. During my 7 years in the Army I can say without a doubt Sgt Lilley was 1 of the best men I ever served with.. After being in the Unit for 6 months or so he was promoted to Sergeant E-5 and at that time he assumed the duties as the Alpha Team Leader and I was his SAW gunner.. Our Squad Leader at that time was SSG Christopher Martinez. I was just looking over the numerous competitions and Physical stamina awards our Squad received and those memories I will never forget. Its hard to believe that its been that long.. As I think my brain is overwhelmed.. I still can picture him studying for the Q-Course when we first got stationed at Bragg. The motorcycle rides we frequently took, the daily 6 mile Monte Berico runs, and the way he looked at Chris.. Its not that often that you can just see the love in someone’s eyes like you could with him.. I know that he loved what he did but still can’t stop the tears in my eyes for this men of men..A true American fighting man that gave his life for the Country he so loved..

God Bless

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Arthur, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To my friend, you lived and breathed it daily, as kids we dressed up as Army men and did things that people do not believe even to this day, but those are the memories that will never fade. My thoughts are with your family and I share in their loss. Almost one year later, the biggest regret is that I did not get to look you in the face and shake your hand for close to 15 years............

I feel happy that I can call Art one of the best friends to myself and my wife....why? Because we spent more than five minutes with the man, we were albe to wheel with him where he was always helpful and willing to explain everything, to the time he spent back at my house helping me fix my junk...It takes about 10 minutes to realize Art is one of the best friends you will and can ever have.
It takes about 10 seconds to realize that you would like to live a life a 1/4 of the life he had....Art wasnt just a best friend to all of us..but a legacy to all that follow us...sure he was a cut up but would be have him any other way?Not Atrie!
Arthur L Lilley...you have no idea how many lives you had touched with your short time on earth, but let it be known, they were all positive and many of us are changing out lives to try to pattern yours....
If I can live in the shadow of Art Lilley and do 15% of what he did, I would die a happy family fan....thanks to Art, his crew, and the rest of his guys over there fighting the fight....stay strong, keep our head down and be safe,,,we need you all back homoe with that family you love

Thanks Art for showing me so many things that you didn't even know you had done....
I miss ya buddy and I wont be able to see you again soon again, god and the USA lost an icon in the battle of life and all we can to is march on take a piece of Art with us, excel, and overcome.....

RIP in Piece my friend...I wear your colors with pride! As did you, there is no other way!

Art's wife Chris is my first cousin. Art has been in our family for most of my life. I remember watching them go on dates and hearing about school dances and hear them on the phone thinking how cool the two of them were. I was even a bridesmaid in their wedding. All of these memories make it almost impossible to believe that Art is gone. It's the most grief that I've ever experienced. Losing Art has given me a heartfelt sense of patriotism and a great respect and love for our military and their families. Art's life defines the word hero in every aspect that he lived it. Art was brought into our family, not born into it, and for that I am truly grateful and proud to have such a man as him in our lives. We will always love and miss Art!

To my cousin, Master Sgt. Art Lilley may you rest in peace. You are truly one of the bravest men I know. You are greatly missed and will be loved and cherished forever. Your death has been very tragic and saddened us all; however, I find myself in the midst of tears feeling gratitude for everything you are. Artie you were one of a kind and for that, this world will never been the same without you. Thank you! I love you and miss you dearly. You will never be forgotten!

Zack Dawson

July 4, 2007

My name is Zack Dawson, and I am proud to say that I am the cousin of MSgt. Arthur L. Lilley.

Today is our country's independence day, and on our nations birthday we must stop and reflect on the freedoms and liberties that we are able to enjoy each passing day for one reason; our soldiers.

Every day these brave individuals continue to defend our friends and families from harm, demonstrating true courage and heroism. In my reflections of heroism, one great name will always come to mind: MSgt. Arthur L. Lilley.

If you have never met Artie I can easily tell you that he was most definitely a hero. A hero is defined as displaying "hero" like qualities/characteristics in the face of danger and evil. Not only did Artie display these qualities daily but exemplified courage, bravery, honor, and self-sacrifice for our nation as he stood against evil forces wishing to destroy our freedoms.

Artie was, and will always be, my hero in general life. Not only was he a fine soldier, but he was also a fantastic father, son, and friend. He was the type of person that would always put others first, ensuring their happiness, even to complete strangers.

He had a certain glow that would touch everyone around him, making it seem as though you've known him your entire life. In trying to describe his personality, we will always remember his silliness, compassion, adventurous, and courageous personality that could only be described as genuine.

My heart aches with the loss of this amazing person, but today I look at the flags hanging in the yards of friends and neighbors not seeing just stars and stripes, but rather, my cousin/my hero, MSgt. Arthur L. Lilley giving all to ensure our free tomorrow.

I will always hold you in my heart Artie and I will never be able to thank you for what you have given, all I can hope is that I make you proud and that I will see you one day in heaven.

To the family of Master Sgt. Art Lilley, You have our deepest sympathy and you are in our thoughts and prayers. I grew up on Liberty St. in Smithfield and I knew of Artie because he lived right down the road. It is such an honor to know that He is our hometown Hero and a Hero to All. I am blessed to know that he gave His life so we could be free, loving His country just like Jesus loved us..

June 29, 2007

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

I will never forget the peanut butter and jelly sandwich we shared after that jump into England. Cold, hungry and tired, we agreed it was the best thing we had ever eaten. When you showed up at Campbell to say hi and have dinner. It crushes me to know that I will never see that goofy smile on your baby face, hear that infectious laugh or see that chest puffed out with hands on hips. You will be missed the rest of my days.

June 25, 2007

Art was one of my best friends and I can truefully say he was a hero. Everything he ever did was in support of our country. To sit down with him and hear him tell a story about one of his missions or get to hang out with him on the trail was a big enjoyment to say the least. Art always took his responsibilities very seriously. He loved his church, family, his country and the off-road community. Just this past Tuesday I told him how I really looked forward to his return in November so we could get together and do some 4 wheeling. Rawlings and I had planned on working on his trail truck in order to get it in shape for his return from his deployment. Art, I am sure you are in a place where you will feel no pain. Rest in peace my friend. I will pray daily for your family. You will be missed. Thanks for your faithful, heroic, un-selfish, service to our nation. It has been a privilege to call Art Lilley my friend. God Bless his family.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Lilley family in the loss of Arthur. I did not know Arthur,( I lived in the Easton/Bangor PA area 52 years) but my heart is broken and I am saddened for your loss of such a fine young person and hero. May God bring you peace in your heart as you reflect on all the wonderful memories you hold so close. Please know that you are in my heart and prayers. My heart was touched by the many wonderful/beautiful things written about you. Arthur you are my hero and you will NEVER be forgotten.

My husband and Master Sgt. Lilley, (Artie) grew up together and graduated together. Both Adrian and Artie married their high school sweethearts. My husband always shared special memories he had with Artie, taking papers together, getting in trouble together and many many more. But more than that my husband shared his respect and admiration for Artie for serving our country. We thought of Artie every day. We thank God each and every day for Artie's sacrifice. We will in memory of a wonderful person continue to support "OPERATION FREEDOM ENDURANCE". We will pray for Chris, Mckenzie and Cole and we will keep in touch. Artie you will be missed and we will remember you each and every day when we rise and when we lay down in our warm beds and thank you for fighting for that right to be free.

Father we entrust our brother Arthur to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Arthur in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

Master Sgt, Arthur Lilley
you are my hero
may god keep you in his arms forever.

Today a poem came to me
it is about home when I was young
I call it i remember when
I can remember home when i was a kid,
I can remember the dandly lyions on the front yard
I can remember the pine tree in the back yard
I can remember the sunshine in that yard
I can remember the lilacks in the back yard and the essence through the yard
I can remember mowing the yard
I can remember the gravel driveway
I can remember the gray panted porch
I can remember the sunshine on that same Porch
I can remember the grey painted fence clinging on to it sometimes
I can remember being home.

Mast Sgt. Lilley and Family:

Know in your heart that you are a true hero and will never be forgotten. All gave some, some gave all. Rest in peace. You will be missed by everyone’s life you have touched.

To the family, as the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life’s routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family, friends, and all Americans for the sacrifice of one of your family members for our freedom. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May you find comfort in the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father.

Please know how Deeply Sorry I am to learn of the loss of Master Sgt. Arthur Lilley, the Price this Brave Young Soldier and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten.

May Arthur rest safely now, in the Loving Care of God and may the Grace and Comfort of the Lord be with the Lilley family.
There will Never Be Enough Ways to Humbly Thank these Heroes for their Sacrifices, my brother among them. Killed in action in Vietnam, in 1967.

"I consider that our present sufferings.
are not worth comparing with the glory
that shall be revealed in us."
Romans 8:18

May the Peace of God and your treasured memories of Arthur, remain in your heart always and give you comfort and
strength through the difficult days ahead.
