Aubrey West Obituary

Aubrey D. West passed away on August 15, 2017 in Colorado Springs. He was born on July 12, 1942 in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Weimer and Alice (Graves) West. He grew up in Nebraska City and spent summer vacations in Colorado with his family. He was eager to live near the mountains, when his family moved to Littleton, CO. in 1958. He later climbed more than forty of Colorado's fourteeners.

Aubrey graduated from Littleton High School in 1960. He received a B.A. in history from the University of Colorado in 1964 and later a Master's in education from Denver University.

Aubrey moved to Colorado Springs with his wife Helen in 1966. He taught history and government at North Junior High and Palmer High School and also at Pikes Peak Community College. He was a gifted teacher who encouraged his students to participate in National History Day.

Many of his students won awards for their projects. Aubrey also received awards for excellence in teaching: Daughters of the American Revolution Teacher of the Year in 1989 and the Crystal Apple Award from School District #11 in 1999. In retirement, Aubrey volunteered at the Pioneers Museum.

Aubrey and Sue married in 1985 and together enjoyed traveling, backpacking, hiking and cross country skiing. Aubrey always had his Norwegian Elkhound or Siberian Husky along on his adventures.

Aubrey is survived by his wife Sue and three children: Andrew, Heather and Colin West and four grandchildren. His two sisters: Carol West and Kathy Sullivan also survive.

I wish I had looked him up sooner so he could have known that I respected him and remembered him and the impact he had on me, my whole life. I'm sorry for your loss. He was an amazing teacher and a great man. We are richer for having known him even for one school year, and society is poorer for having lost him.

I met Aubrey when I worked at the Pioneers Museum. He always had a sunny disposition and was an invaluable member of the volunteer staff, greeting visitors at the front desk and making them feel at home. Always the jokester, after losing his home in Mountain Shadows during the Waldo Canyon fire, he offered to sell me the burned out hulk of his Subaru dirt cheap!
You will be missed Aubrey! Rest In Peace.

Mr. West is the reason I got to nationals in History Day, and the reason I became a social scientist. He showed me how amazing it was to study and understand social systems, and how useful it is to have historical context for current events. He was a gifted and inspiring teacher.

Of all the teachers I had in life, he is one I think of the most often. As weird as it sounds, we got each other and that went a long way for me as far as learning from him. He was a treasure and I will, as always, think of him fondly. God speed, Captain.
