BARBARA "BARB" LYNNE BEREIT
September 15, 1951 May 18, 2021
Barbara Lynne Bereit, 69, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away May 18, 2021 at St. Francis Hospital.
She was born September 15, 1951 to Anna and Dick Himebaugh in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Barbara attended Maryvale High School in Phoenix, Arizona and graduated in 1969. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland, while she attended the Army's Walter Reed Institute of Nursing. Subsequently, she earned a Master of Science degree in Counseling from the University of Oklahoma. She worked her entire adult life as a nurse in many and varied roles. She worked in intensive care, school nursing, home health, and her last fifteen years she served as a psychiatric care nurse at Northern Arizona University and at the University of Utah.
Barbara's greatest love was for her family. As a military spouse, she traveled the world with her husband. Her children were born in England, two in Germany, and one in Colorado Springs. She organized the family and guided their moving seventeen times in thirty years.
She was an active and deeply committed Christian. Barbara led Bible studies and discipled women throughout her entire life. She loved to run, ski, and garden. She served and loved her family; she helped hundreds of patients heal from physical and psychological sickness; she made friends of everyone she met. Her friendship and joy of life were a gift to everyone who knew her. She is now hearing from her Savior, "Well done, you good and faithful servant." As Solomon wrote - "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised."
Barbara is preceded in death by her father, Dick Himebaugh; her mother, Anna Himebaugh; and her older sister, Sandy Himebaugh.
She is survived by her husband, Colonel Rick Bereit, USAF, (Ret.); her children, Derek Bereit, Kristine Stark, Rebekah Guzman, and Kathleen Crawford; and sister, Carol Himebaugh. Additionally, she was grandmother to eight beautiful grandchildren.
Memorial contributions in Barbara's memory can be made to The Barbara Bereit Memorial Scholarship Fund at PPCC Foundation, 5676 South Academy Boulevard C-68, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80906 or online at: https://www.ppcc.edu/foundation/how-give.
The family wishes to express enduring thanks to the Navigator staff who helped prepare Barbara for many productive years of service to others.

Barb was a source of inspiration, strength, and wisdom for so many people that came to know her as I did back in 1975 at Upper Heyford.
It's been said that it takes a day to bury the dead and a lifetime to bury the sorrow. I shall forever treasure the Christian influence she and Rick have instilled in my heart.

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss, but as you well know, Barbara has graduated to glory and received her "Welcome home." I pray the Lord's grace for you will be sufficient as you mourn the loss of your beloved.

Barbara and I were suitemates our junior year at WRAIN. She got me involved with Navigators. And I had the honor of being one of her bridesmaids. Her family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I am very sorry for your loss. As a fellow WRAIN graduate, Class of 1974 I did not have the pleasure to have known Barbara at Walter Reed but we certainly were blessed to be a part of that program. It produced many great nurses and she obviously was one by her service and life well lived. I wish I had met her since I live in Colorado Springs. May you be comforted by your faith and memories.
