Barbara Budd Obituary

Barbara Tews Budd was born January 4, 1935 in Milwaukee to Herbert Albert Tews and Helen Dieman Tews of Neenah, Wisconsin. She died peacefully on November 16 in Colorado Springs.

Barbara graduated with a BA in English from Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts. During her first year she met Yale student John Marshall Budd, Jr. They married soon after graduation, relocating to Minneapolis to begin raising a family. She fell in love again in 1972, this time with the bright sun and magnificent mountain vistas of Colorado Springs. Within a year, the family moved there to stay. But each year she returned to the North Shore of Lake Superior, spending a month with dear friends and extended family.

Barbara was active in the community wherever she lived. She co-authored guidebooks about Minnesota and Colorado Springs, joined Bible study groups and participated in other intellectual gatherings. She volunteered at Penrose Hospital, supporting families of ICU patients, and served on arts-based boards and councils. For over 35 years, she hosted a beloved charity-based quilting group.

Art was her greatest passion. She was a sculptor and enjoyed supporting other artists. Her sculptures are in the collections of the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, the Chapel of Our Saviour Episcopal Church and the Mayo Clinic as well as in private collections. Barbara was a founding member of what is now the Manitou Art Center. As a member of the Advisory Committee of the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center she was instrumental in co-creating the Tactile Gallery.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 57 years and their children: Elizabeth Budd Ellmann (Stephen), John Marshall Budd III, Peter Bullard Budd (Jenna Zark), Benjamin Brewster Budd and three grandchildren, John MacMillan Budd, Noah Penner Budd and Joshua Kowitz.

A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at the Chapel of Our Saviour Episcopal Church, 8 Fourth Street, Colorado Springs, November 22 at 2:00 p.m. Memorials are welcome: Chapel of Our Saviour, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, or to donors' favorite charities.

To the family and especially Pete, I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear of your mother's passing. She was a wonderful and caring person. Even though we have not been in touch lately, she was always on my mind. So looked forward to the annual Christmas letters. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
