Barbara Couchman Obituary

Barbara Jean (Cavett) Couchman died on May 11 at her home surrounded by her family. She fought a long, arduous battle against breast cancer and did so with grace and dignity. Barbara moved to Colorado Springs in 1966 to teach 4th grade at Douglass Valley Elementary School on the Air Force Academy where she met some of her dearest and longest standing friends. Prior to her teaching career, she attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and maintained a long and fulfilling friendship with a number of members of the Alpha Sigma Pi Social Club known as the Arrows. Barbara was born in Rockford, Illinois, in 1943, and later moved to Northfield, Illinois, where she attended New Trier High School. She married Robert Couchman in May of 1971 and together they raised two children, Amy Leigh Couchman of Castle Rock, Colorado, and Alison Marie Spindor of Colorado Springs. Barbara took great pride and happiness in the success of her children and their relationships with Cindy Quincy and Brian Spindor, respectively. In 1978 Barbara went to work as a file clerk for United Services Automobile Association and retired in 2000 as Property & Casualty Training Manager. During her 22 years at USAA she made many wonderful friends and had many challenging, fulfilling experiences. Barbara was a gentle, unassuming, caring person who achieved her happiness through her family, friends, and simple pleasures. She died too young, and all of those whole lives she touched will miss her terribly and will carry her in their hearts forever. She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Dean Cavett; her mother, Ruth Amber Cavett; and her sister, Virginia Cavett Rice. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in her name to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, PO BOX 9670, Colorado Springs, CO 80932.

Barb was a lovely and caring person who will be sorely missed by all of us that knew her and worked with her. My thoughts and prayers go out to her surviving family members who have lost such a wonderful part of their lives.

I have never met Barbara. I sat on a NWA flight next to her sister with the last name of Groot (good Dutch name) who lived in N.C.
The flight was a connecting flight from Minneapolis to Colorado Springs.

From our conversations, I could see the pain of having to say goodbye and the passion of family serving God. Having lost 2/4 grandparents, my 10 year old daughter (child #2) and myself decided to do something for those who have lost a loved one from cancer. We have committed personal donations this year as well as a collection box at the parts counter of our dealership and we are looking into becoming part of programs that benefit cancer research.

There are people who care. There are people who listen. Then there are people who commit and act upon the commitment.

To the person I have only met through the words of a loved one:
Through life we struggle to find answers to the question why. When we find the answer, we then look for the how. Why does God want to have a relationship with us and how do we seek it? Through seeking we begin to mold into the person God meant for us to be. When the time comes for God to call us home, we begin to understand that why is not as important as the seeking; the journey. The journey defines how we lived. May you start another journey in eternity.
Your family is in our prayers.

Barb was the person who gave me my "break" into the world of training at USAA. She took a chance on a person with no formal teaching experience and I will be forever grateful to her for believing in me. My thoughts are with her family and I am very sorry for your loss. But know that, she made a difference in many people's lives including mine.
