The golf world lost a great one with the passing of Barbara McIntire on May 5, 2025 at age 90. She was a resident of Southern Pines, NC where she owned a house with her long-time friends, Tish Preuss and Judy Bell. Tish died in July 2024. Barbara and Judy Bell were friends and business partners since they opened the first of seven stores at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO in 1962.
Barbara was born on January 12, 1935 in Toledo, Ohio. She began playing golf at age 10 and played in her first U.S. Women's Amateur in 1950 at the age of 15, Barbara twice won the U.S. Women's Amateur and in 1960 won the British Ladies Amateur, becoming one of eight women to simultaneously hold the American and British titles and earning her the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine.
Barbara was inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame, the Ohio Golf Hall of Fame and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. In 2000, she was voted the Bob Jones Award, the highest honor given by the USGA in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf.
As Barbara had no living relatives, she is survived by a long list of friends who she shared a wonderful life with—on and off the golf course.
