Barbara Olson Obituary

September 13, 2001
Barbara Olson, Advocate and Conservative Commentator, Dies at 45
By NEIL A. LEWIS
WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 — Barbara K. Olson, who was killed on Tuesday on the commercial jetliner that was hijacked and flown into the Pentagon, was well known to television viewers across the nation as a combative and confident political commentator representing the conservative Republican point of view.

Mrs. Olson, 45, was also half of a highly influential couple on Washington's social-political scene; her husband, Theodore B. Olson, an appellate lawyer, successfully argued the Florida election case for George W. Bush before the Supreme Court. President Bush named Mr. Olson the nation's solicitor general, the official who formulates the administration's strategy before the nation's courts.

Mr. Olson was in his Justice Department office on Tuesday morning when he received two calls from Mrs. Olson, who was using her cell phone aboard American Airlines Flight 77 to tell him the plane had been hijacked. Her description of what was occurring in her last moments provided what officials said was valuable information about the incident. She reported that the flight crew had been herded to the back of the plane with the passengers, and she asked her husband what she should tell the pilot who was apparently beside her while the hijackers were in control of the cockpit.

Mrs. Olson's friends and her husband said her efforts to "do something" on the doomed plane were exquisitely in character. " She never sat back," her husband said in an interview.

The Olsons, who were married four years ago, complemented each other in style. Mrs. Olson was the more outspoken of the two in her televised commentaries, while Mr. Olson presented a more deliberative face in his role as the reigning constitutional litigator for the Republican establishment.

Although Mrs. Olson was generally a take-no-prisoners advocate, Mr. Olson recalled on Tuesday that she recently told him she had come to believe that the national political debate had become too acrimonious. He recalled that she said that during one television appearance, she believed those who called in comments to her and her liberal counterpart, Bill Press, were far too harsh.

Barbara Kay Bracher Olson was born on Dec. 27, 1955, in Houston, and trained to be a teacher at the University of St. Thomas in her hometown. But, she had told friends, she wanted to save enough money to go to law school and decided a quicker way to do so than teaching was to become a part of the film industry.

With no experience in the field but an abundance of self-confidence, she moved to Hollywood and began telephoning production companies connected to well-known actors, offering herself as an all-around helper. Stacy Keach finally offered her a job, Mr. Olson recalled this week, and when she saved enough money to go to law school, she moved to New York to attend the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University.

Mrs. Olson turned down jobs in New York after law school because she yearned to live in Washington. As chief counsel for the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee's Republican majority from 1995 to 1996, Mrs. Olson led the investigation into President Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton's role in firing longtime employees of the White House travel office. She became a caustic and relentless critic of the Clintons.

Mrs. Olson wrote "Hell to Pay" (Regnery, 1999), a highly critical book about Mrs. Clinton, and recently finished a sequel, "Final Days," about the Clintons' last weeks in the White House. Mr. Olson said it would be published by Regnery.

Mrs. Olson is survived by her brother, David Bracher, and her sister, Antoinette Lawrence, both of Houston, as well as her husband.

I really do miss her contributions to CNN and was crestfallen when I first heard years back that she was one of the many victims on that terrible day. I've never been one to watch any political or news discussion shows, but with Barbara on the panel I tried to watch and listen as often as I could. A very intelligent, forthright and honest individual.

I always felt a kinship with Barbara as I relished her articulate and charismatic debate on TV. I just now discover she and I shared the same birth date, she born 6 years after me. I once got to talk to one of her staff on one of those random survey calls. Even the interviewer realilzed that our views were symbiotic. I so admired her and knew one day she'd be President or die trying. RIP dear one. Gone to soon but not forgotten.

I just can't say how sad & shocked I was (& still am) by Barbara's death. She was so bright & smart. If I didn't agree with something she said on Larry King's show, I respected her so much that I would think long & hard about what she had said & often conceded that she was correct & I was wrong. Such a great personality, so bubbly & smiling with that enormous intellect & incisive mind. She had charisma in spades. I only knew her from TV & the press, & therefore if I was distressed by her death, I cannot even begin to imagine how her family, friends & colleagues felt. My heart & prayers are with all those who mourn the loss of a truly exceptional wonderful lady.

I happened to read the memorial for Barbara again yesterday as I did also in 2006 in the Houston Chronicle. Something about her beautiful face and the verse written touched me. I saw the date of death and wondered if she had died in a 9/11 tradgedy. I googled her name and found out all about her as I did not know who she was. My condolences to her family. She, as all of the victims, was indeed a Patriot.

Even after all these years, I still miss seeing Barbara on my favorite network- FOX NEWS. I think she was on Fox the day before she died. And, I recall watching that whole segment. I just couldnt believe it when Fox News broke into regular programming to tell us that Barbara was on that doomed plane that hit the Pentagon. That was so sad. She was a wonderful commentator. I still can't believe she's gone.
Ted, I hope & pray that you are doing OK without her on this earth. You will rejoin her one day. I know she misses you so much. I hope things are going good for you Ted. We all felt so bad for you when it happened. Please know that many Americans still think of Barbara & pray for her & your whole family. May you find comfort in knowing that you will see her again one day.

A week or so before 9/11 I watched Barbara on a news talk show. I really enjoyed it and was impressed with her comments. When I learned she was on the plane that hit the pentagon I was completely shocked and saddened. Barbara Olson put a human face on the tragity for me.

Although a Democrat and very much, a Clinton supporter, I respected Barbara Olson very much. She was tough, but compassionate, unrelenting, yet sensible. Barbara was decent to her counterparts on-air, and always, after finishing her remarks or replies, she always did so with a smile...swinging her head back so as to brush back her hair. A beatiful person inside and out, and always a pleasure to watch and listen to. I will indeed miss her terribly. There is a void now, and it it noticable on the air...it's not the same without her. To her husband Ted, God bless you. I send to you my deepest and most heartfelt expressions of sympathy. Millions loved Barbara as I did, and always will. In the darkness of this unbelievable tragedy, how clearly we see the stars...and how clearly we see her now; her smile, her eyes, the joyful, playful laugh. A strong, principled woman who never gave up a good fight. How desperately we need her now to go after the terrorists and those who were involved in ending her life. To Barbara, I say-we will never give up the fight for justice! We will bring these to justice, so that your death will not have been in vain! We love you Barbara! We will never forget you! May God forever keep you in his loving embrace! Dave Berthold

Dear Mr. Olson,I recently was accepted into law school out here in California. Classes start in January. Since the five months that I have been out here, after moving from Michigan, I have had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman who happens to acquire a tremendous amount of knowledge. Probably one of the most intelligent men I have ever met. After he learned of my acceptence into law school he has been trying to prepare me for the challenges and obstacles that I am going to encounter. One of his preparations for me was to write a short paper on who is the solicitor general and who was his wife. I began doing the assignment and learned a great deal of important information about who the Solicitor General is and what his functions and duties are to the Unied States Justice Department. I didn't really know who your wife was until I started to do a little research. Wow, what a wonderful and enthusiactic person she must have been. I do remember a lot of talk on the news about a woman newscaster who was on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon, I just didn't put two and two together. Mr. Olson, your wife sounds like she was a very brave, intelligent, beautiful and a woman who believed in what she was saying. I will forever remember your wife and my sympathies go out to you and all of her friends and family.Deepiest SympathiesMichael Prater

The students and staff at St. Pius X High School in Houston also remember Mrs. Olson in a very special way during our memorial prayer services and fasting for peace over the next ten days. During this period of time, her name is being worn on a commemorative wristband as a daily reminder of the loss of her life and the sadness we experienced on September 11th. As a sign of solidarity, we join our prayers with other members of the Dominican community who stand vigil for us at Ground Zero during the month of September. Please accept our heartfelt condolences and know that you, your family and friends are remembered in our prayers.
