Barbara Stockman Obituary

Barbara was the only child of Mark and Mildred Sheafe in Kansas City, Mo. She was raised in Watertown South Dakota where she became a champion checkers player as a teenager. She loved animals starting from her early years. She often told of her best childhood Christmas when she received her first pony. Once she fell from a pony and was dragged by the stirrup. Upon regaining consciousness her first words were "when can I get back on?" This was characteristic of the courage and persistence she showed throughout her life.

She graduated from the University of South Dakota and worked at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where she met her husband to be, Professor Lynn Stockman. They married and had two children, Mary Lynn and Ann Stockman. On Lake Michigan she became an accomplished water skier.

Barbara completed a Master's degree in Rehabilitation at the University of Arizona and worked as a drug and alcohol rehab counselor. She also volunteered as a child advocate. Barbara was active in the Episcopal Church and became a vestry member.

In 1985 Barbara moved to Black Forest, Colorado. She was active in trail and endurance riding for many years and was a member of the Cavalier Trail Riding Club.

She always had a companion dog during her years in the Black Forest. Her last dog, Shadow, stayed by her side night and day.

She is survived by daughters Mary Lynn Willis and Ann Stockman, grandson Matthew Arreola and their families.

A private interment will be held at the Fort Logan National Cemetery.

In place of flowers, contributions to honor Barbara may be given to the National Mill Dog Rescue.
