Barry Stimits Obituary

Barry W. Stimits was born April 22, 1947 in Colorado Springs CO to Rose and Ivan Stimits. He passed away at his home in Woodland Park, CO on April 22, 2016.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy, and his three children Kevin, Brian and Kristyn as well as his step children, Erik Austin and Megan Austin.

Barry graduated from Wasson High School and attended college at Western State where he ran track and earned a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry.

After college, Barry went on to be a successful football and wrestling coach across Colorado and Nebraska where he taught for nearly 13 years.

In 1981, he opened a Baskin Robbins store in Fort Morgan CO. He then moved with his family to Colorado Springs to open another Baskin Robbins store.

Barry re-married in 1989 to Kathy Austin. Their new family together grew to seven and they spent as much free time as possible on the water with their boat including regular summer visits to Lake Powell.

In the mid 90's, Barry sold his ice cream store, which enabled him to start an ice cream concession business. He ran it successfully until 2013 when he retired to spend more time with his wife on their 35 acre mountain escape in Woodland Park CO.

Barry was a consistent participant, literally a fixture, in the 11:45 Silver Sneakers cardio class at Woodland Fitness center. No matter how sick or shaky he felt, he made it a point to be there and work out! We had so much fun talking about our mutual high school Alma mater, Wasson High School. We were both Thunderbirds through and through. You gotta love a guy whose name was spelled the same frontwards and backwards! We always laughed about that. too. You are missed big guy...............

Kathy,
My heart aches for you and your family. Barry was such a fun spirit and always smiling even through the illness and its limitations. He was truly special and will be missed by all who knew him.

Kathy and family, we are so very sorry for your loss. It was interesting reading all about him and found out things we did not know. We pray for all of you and know that God will get you through all the challenging times ahead. We are still in Florida until the middle of May, so we won't be able to attend the service. Our hearts are with you.
