Bernard Baker Obituary

Judge Bernard (Bud) R. Baker died on March 7, 2006 at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo. He was 68. Born in Chicago, he was the son of Bernard F. Baker and Pearl (Beasley) Baker. Bernard received his B.S. from Northwestern University in 1958, and his J.D. from Indiana University School of Law in 1964. He served in the Army Judge Advocate General Corps at Fort Bliss, TX., from 1965 to 1967. He was appointed Colorado Springs Deputy District Attorney from 1968-1974, working as head of the Consumer Fraud Division. At 38, Bernard was appointed District Judge for the 4th Judicial District in Colorado Springs. He served as a judge from 1975 -1989. He retired to Pueblo in 2001 to become closer to what he liked most, the scenic Colorado mountains. He is survived by his daughters: Susan Baker of Ridgway, CO., Deborah Baker (Schwartz) of Denver and Pamela Baker (Paulsen) of Buckingham, PA.; and five grandchildren. The family is holding a private memorial ceremony. Donations may be made in Judge Baker's memory to the Sierra Club.

Well. my friend, it was a 43 year friendship/relationship with its ups and downs, its laughter and tears. I know that you are somewhere climbing in your beloved mountains. I am glad we were in Sedona last year and that you were the first person I saw the Grand Canyon with. To Bud's Family:

Bud and I served together in the Staff Judge Advocate's Office at Ft. Bliss, TX. My daughter, Brenda, and Susan were the same age and good friends. Bud and I stayed in touch, and he visited me in Phoenix about a month before his death. We were looking forward to a reunion of our JAG buddies in El Paso in June, 2006. He was a good friend and will be missed by all of his JAG compatriots. We will toast him at the reunion.

As a family, we are deeply saddened by your untimely death. Lately you appeared to be enjoying your life immensely, both personally and professionally, so the timing is yet more tragic. Dear Susan, Deborah, and Pam,

So sorry to have the news about Bud. Had plans to go and visit him after talking with your mother so regret I did not have this opportunity. Have some good memories of conversations we had over lunch from time to time. It was an honor to be his pastor. Respected him for the causes that he thought important.
