Bernard Carolan Obituary

Bernard Patrick Carolan, 81, died February 4, 2016. He passed peacefully at his home in Colorado Springs. He was born June 2, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois to Sylvester and Margaret Carolan.

Bernie enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in June 1952, two days after his eighteenth birthday, and saw service with the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War. He was subsequently stationed at Quantico, Virginia. At a dance

in Washington, D.C. he met Doris Ethel Hoth, who was working for the FBI at the time. She was to be his wife for over fifty-two years.

After his discharge in June 1955, Bernie attended Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois using the GI Bill. He graduated in May 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. During his college years Bernie married Doris Hoth on December 17, 1955; was a pitcher for the Elmhurst College baseball team, and an employee of the US Post Office.

After graduation, he worked in marketing and finance positions in Iowa and Illinois for General Electric, Westinghouse, and Press Publications. He lived in Addison, Illinois during most of these years, and was active as a Cubmaster, Little League baseball coach, and member of the VFW.

Bernie moved his family to the Salida, Colorado area in the fall of 1972 where he owned and managed first a truck stop followed by a steak house. In 1984 he moved to Colorado Springs where he was employed by SCI. He retired in July 2000.

Bernie loved to travel with Doris. Some of the special vacations were to Hawaii, Iowa, Virginia and Washington D.C. to visit family and friends. Bernie was quite the photographer on these trips and the family will treasure the memories captured on film. In addition, Bernie enjoyed his Tuesday discussion group, where he participated in spirited conversations around current events, history and politics.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother Jimmy, and wife Doris. He is survived by his children Bernard (Karen) Carolan, Jr.; LTC Marc (Greta) Carolan; Carrie (SMSGT Mark) Petrosky; LtCol Christopher (Monica) Carolan, and six grandchildren; SSG Benjamin Carolan, John Carolan, Laura Petrosky, Andrew Petrosky, Margaret Carolan and Nicholas Carolan.
