BERYL SAUL Obituary

Beryl Patricia Ralston Saul
11 February 1919 – 15 January 2014
Beloved wife of Colonel William Saul (deceased) of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and later of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry; mother of Alastair (Lavender), John (Adrienne) and Anthony (deceased); grandmother of Clarissa and William; great-grandmother of Maximillian.
Descendant of a distinguished Scottish military family, she was born in London and spent her first six years in India where her father, Major William Ralston, was an officer in the Rajputs, then guardian of the Raja of Nanpara, when he was a minor, then his political advisor. Her mother and father died young, so she and her brother John were brought up by their aunt, Lady Graham–Little, whose husband was the long-time MP for the University of London. In 1941, her only sibling, John, a pilot in the RAF, was shot down and killed near Dusseldorf. She herself served in the FANY's (the women's regiment which, among other things, provided drivers and driving instructors for the army) and married her husband, Captain Bill Saul, a young Canadian officer from the Winnipeg Rifles, who would go on to land on D-Day in 1944.
She came to Canada on the Mauritania in 1946 with their eldest son, Alastair. After the war her husband transferred to the PPCLI and for the next twenty five years they made their life on one army base after another in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario, while she brought up her three sons. Later they were in Paris and Brussels with NATO.
On her husband's early death she returned to England. Her funeral was held on February 3, 2014, Holy Trinity Church, Sutton Montis, England, attended by family, close friends and her only godson, Patrick Vaughan.
A celebratory mass was held on Thursday, February the 13th, 2014, in the Chapel of Saint Teresa's Home in London, where she spent her last year in the wonderful care of the Sisters of St. Anne.
