Betty Evans Obituary

Born Betty Jeane Wheeler to Buena and Ruth Wheeler (both deceased) on February 16, 1928, north of Haxtun, Colorado, Betty was the oldest of their children. Doris (Dean) Dion, Marian (Ken) Meitz, and Roy (toni) Wheeler survive.

Betty graduated from Fleming High, attended Colorado State University for a brief time, and married Harold (Shorty) Haynes in 1948. Five children were born to that marriage: Terry Haynes, Jeanne (Richard) Whitney, Jody (Jeff) Yoxall, survive; Tommy and Jill predeceased Betty.

The "redhead" of the family, Betty became a homemaker, won a state and national Pillsbury cooking contest (where she met Ronald Reagan, won a $1000 prize and a GE stove!), learned farming, ranching, auctioneering (with Shorty), and was a bank insurance representative, while raising her children, in Haxtun, Colorado.

Shorty Haynes died in 2001, ending 53 years of marriage. In 2002, widow Betty Haynes was contacted by a widowed man to whom she had been briefly engaged, before deciding to go to college. She and Paul Evans (D.O.B. 6/19/26!), who survives, were married in the United Methodist Church of Haxtun, Colorado, on May 31, 2002, with children of both participants attending, plus many friends.

Betty leaves, not only those mentioned above, but four grandchildren; Erik (Emily) Morse, Kyle Morse, Ryan Sturgeon, and Jordyn Sturgeon, plus two great-grandchildren, Eli Morse and Parker Oliver, step-children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, loving and caring in-laws, and a host of good friends, all of whom will keep Betty in their memories for always. Betty left us to our memories of her on the 5th day of June, 2016.

A memorial will be held at 10:30AM, Friday, June 17, 2016 at the Haxtun United Methodist Church (address is 106 S. Washington Ave., Haxtun, CO 80731, or P.O. Box 145) (Betty was a former treasurer).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church in Betty's name, should you so desire.
