Betty Lynn Mahaffy left the planet on December 26, 2022, after suffering ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Born November 10, 1952 in Evansville, Indiana, she moved with her family to Colorado Springs at age 4 and attended Bates, Stratton, Horace Mann, and Wasson schools. Skipping her senior year of high school, she earned her BA in social work at UCCS and, later, her MA in speech language pathology at the University of Northern Colorado.
Betty Lynn was the first female Colorado journeyman in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and was employed by Maestas Electric and Whitney Electric companies. Later, she worked as a Speech Language Pathologist for District 11.
Betty Lynn served on the Board of the Rocky Mountain Women's Film Festival for 20 years as a member of the selection committee. A lifelong peace activist since elementary school, she worked with First Strike Theater and the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission. She participated in the Bill Moyers feature, "The New Holy War" (1993), when Amendment 2 (Colorado's constitutional amendment denying equal rights of protection under the law to LGBTQ+ citizens) was making its way to the Supreme Court.
Within her mischievous, feisty, sometimes outrageous, often hilarious exterior, Betty Lynn was a deeply caring, courageous, shy, sensitive, spiritual, tender-hearted lover of beauty; a loyal friend and passionate advocate for, and practitioner of, love, respect, compassion, and support for one another. She set herself the highest standards in whatever she did.
Preceded in death by her parents and sister, Betty Lynn is survived by her wife of 30 years, Lyn Boudreau; their Godchildren, Sophia and Marin Broadbent-Bell; her family, brothers Jonathan and Brian Mahaffy; sister-in-law Chrissie, nephew Jack, niece Flora, grandnephew Delroy, grandniece Hiltie; and many two-legged and four-legged friends.
Many of her friends were honored to serve on her informal Care Team. Special thanks to them, and to Sage Elder Care, Brightstar, & Interim Hospice for their compassionate, personal care. A memorial service will be held in Spring 2023.
