Beverly Fredericks Obituary

Beverly Fredericks, Renowned Artist, Painter, Sculptor and Art Restorer - 79 Beverly Fredericks, raised in Colorado, and trained in California, as well as Colorado, has long made keen love of nature the primary focus of her work as an artist. Her palette and skill has revealed strong echoes of the American Tonalists, who, prior to the turn-of-the-century, were led by George Inness and Edward Steichen. Tonalism evolved from the Barbizon School of painting and developed in the United States simultaneously with American Impressionism. Like Fredericks' most recent work, it emphasizes poetry, meditation and quiet moods. The forms are generally soft and intimate. The colors are muted and controlled within a narrow range of intensity. Beverly Fredericks' works are outstanding examples of a tradition which dates back more than one hundred years among Southern California artists. "Like William Keith, I find inspiration in the landscape of this richly varied and colorful, sundrenched countryside," she said recently. Her work stressed the relationship of light and nature and stands in the strong tradition of the impressionist and tonalist painters. She was intensely interested in landscapes and seascapes and her work generally depicted the dynamic relations of the elements and the many moods associated with them. Her paintings are found in many important public and private collections, including the Bank of America, National Burn Center at the University of Texas, Hallmark Circuits, Colorado Springs Medical Center, the art collections of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Welk, Mrs. Francis X. Bushman, Mr. Calvin J Goodman and the late Roy Lund Hanson. She was a Fellow of the American Institute of Fine Arts. Her work has been the subject of major articles in American Artist. Fredericks studied with many prominent artists: Boardman Robinson, Vaclav Vytlacil, Emerson Woelffer, Archie Musick, Paul Greenlee and Lucille Brown Greene. She lived and worked in Southern California and exhibited her work widely throughout the West, in galleries in Los Angeles, Colorado Springs, Denver, San Diego, Corona Del Mar, Riverside, Pasadena, Beverly Hills, San Marino, Westlake Village and the Mojave Desert region. She is listed in Who's Who in American Art, and recently Who's Who in American Women. Beverly co-produced a textbook and video in 1991 with her husband Harvey and son Stafford. The Art of Creating Monotypes has been purchased by art schools and libraries as well as individuals world wide. The publication, published by HR Productions in Los Angeles, featured the techniques of Beverly's method for creating monotypes as well as the techniques of Martin Greene, Florence Putterman and Karen Vernon. Beverly's works can be seen at www.beverlyfredericks.com. Ms. Fredericks was born on June 14, 1928 to parents Oscar Frederick Magnuson and India King Glenn in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She married Harvey Ray Fredericks in 1946 and attended the Colorado Fine Arts Institute and Colorado College after graduating from Colorado Springs High School (now Palmer High). Harvey obtained employment with Hughes Aircraft in the late 1960's and the family moved to Los Angeles. Aside from her lengthy painting and sculpting career, she worked also at Hughes Aircraft Company in Culver City, California to help support her growing family. Her husband died in 1992, and her daughter Annetta died in 2005. Beverly passed on July 7, 2007 after a short illness. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Fredrick Magnuson of Denver, and her two sons, John Stafford Fredericks and Jeffrey Robert Fredericks. Both sons live in Los Angeles. She has six grandchildren. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Hollywood Hills on Friday, July 13, 2007 at 11a.m. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday August 11, 2007 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles. Covenant Presbyterian Church is located at 6330 W 80th Street. Los Angeles, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to the Arthritis Foundation at P O Box 96280, Washington DC. 20077-7491.

I may be late in posting this but just had to. After a 30 year absence I felt like time had not ever passed when we met again. I will always regret those lost years. Being Beverly's namesake is special to me since she was such a special person. She is someone who never aged. She was so much fun. I dearly miss her.

What a great lady. She made me feel as if i were part of her family from the time Robert and I started going together. My life and world are better for having her in it. I know she is now in a better place. But, what a hole her passing has left in our hearts.

Beverly, I never saw your face, never shook your hand, nor even spoke to you. But, friends of mine asked me to pray for you during your illness. Through my prayers as I talked to God, I somehow connected to you. My heart tells me that God heard my prayers and you have now been welcomed into the Kingdom. Someday I hope to be there also and maybe then I can see your face, touch you, and share in the Joy that you now know.

My dear sweet Aunt Bev - What more can I say that hasn't already been said. You showed us how to love life and how to live it. That is your legacy. Just like one of your beautiful paintings. You will be missed so much - but we are all richer having had you as a part of our lives. Your love will never end.

We will miss Bev so much! She has been a part of our family every since I can remember. I will always remember her and Harvey at my graduation party (1980) and Bev reminded me of a movie star walking in. Such a caring person, and so interested in people. My mom and her were best friends and almost like sisters. What a great loss! We love and miss you Bev!!

Aunt Beverly certainly was a cheerful and artistic woman, who could always light up her environment. In addition, she was a pillar of strength to her family and I remember her always being able to say just the right thing, when a calming word was needed. I saw a remarkable prudence and even wisdom in the way she carried herself and her loved ones along. I pray that Beverly, Harvey and Anne are soon united in eternal happiness.

I am so glad something told me to call Aunt Bev on Valentines Day. We had such a long and wonderful chat as always. We would always make each other laugh until we cried. I will miss her love of life, love of people, warmth, vitality, and youthful spirit.

I will miss you Aunt Bev, but know you are now with God. The next glorious sunset I see, I will know was painted by Aunt Bev.
