Bill Lofthouse Obituary

LOFTHOUSE-Bill Lofthouse, widely regarded as the "Granddaddy of Rose Parade float builders," died July 5 following a short illness. He was 68. Lofthouse began his affiliation with Pasadena's Tournament of Roses Parade in 1955 when he began working with Isabella Coleman, a pioneer of modern day parade float design. He met his late wife Gretchen Lofthouse at the Coleman float facility; the couple went on to found Phoenix Decorating Co., and develop the firm into the largest commercial builder of Rose Parade floats. The company annually creates nearly half the floats featured in the internationally renowned parade. He was active in the greater-Pasadena community, the festival industry, and a wide variety of philanthropic endeavors. He was an active member of the Board of Directors of the Methodist Hospital Foundation in Arcadia, wa s former city councilman in Bradbury, CA, past president of the Pasadena YMCA Board of Directors, past president and continuing member of the Pasadena Optimist Club and past president of the University Club of Pasadena. He was a moving force in major events throughout the country and around the world and his outstanding contributions to the festival industry garnered him the singular honor of election to the International Festivals and Event Association Hall of Fame. He also was a founding member and pas t president of the California Festivals and Events Association (CalFest) and past president of the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA). "Bill Lofthouse was an icon in the festival industry. A true visionary, Bill pushed the boundaries of creativity and technology by bridging the modest early float designs into spectacular creations found in the Rose Parade today. He was a wonderful ambassador for the Tournament of Roses in the festival business due to his high standards of ingenuity, en tertainment and his unique ability to build and maintain relationships. His legacy will live on through future Rose Parades but his gentle presence will be greatly missed," said Corky Conzonire, 2009 Tournament of Roses President. Prior to concentrating the focus of Phoenix Decorating Co. on the Rose Parade, the firm was the exclusive builder of floats for the Orange Bowl Parade in Florida and the Fiesta Bowl Parade in Arizona simultaneous with it activities in Pasadena on Jan. 1. Lofthouse also guided h is company's creation of floats in the Coca Cola 100th Anniversary Celebration, Kentucky Derby Festival, Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade and the National Day celebration in Singapore. His philanthropy included such groups as the Methodist Hospital, Optimist Boys & Girls Home in Los Angeles, Pasadena's Police Athletic League and the YMCA of Pasadena. He had recently been honored by Methodist Hospital with its Crystal Ball Award, Cedars of Sinai Hospital, the Police Athletic League and was named as " Man of the Year" by the Pasadena YMCA. He is survived by his children Chris, Michelle and Cindy; daughter-in-law Lyn; grandchildren William and Rachel, and his brother David Henry Lofthouse. Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, July 10 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 512 W. Duarte Road, Arcadia. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to Methodist Hospital Foundation, 626-898-8888, P.O Box 60016 Arcadia, Ca 91066-9976 Services are under the direction of Chapel of Remembrance Funeral Home, Arcadia. Chris,
I met Bill in 1977 when he and Steve built the first Honda float. It has been a genuine pleasure to have worked with Bill and yourself on the many wonderful floats you have produced for American Honda.
I've attached a photo of Bill on my favorite float, the 2005 train.
Best wishes to you and your family.

My family and I were so sorry to hear about Bill's death. We were neighbors for years in Pasadena. What are the odds that both Don Boyko and Bill both died of pancreatic cancer? We are praying for your family and know that Bill gave you the support and foundation to continue on with your family's vision. We'll be watching your work every year.

Long before the Float Business, Bill worked for my father Clayton Autry, a Painting Contractor. When I started working for my father in 1966 Bill took me under his wing. My Dad passed away in 1979, and Bill continued with me until about 1984. Bill Lofthouse stands as the man I learned to be a man from. The man I wanted to emulate. He taught by the way he lived. His honesty, devotion to his family, passion, and creativity shown in all that he did. Todays Church Service was an outpouring of love for Bill, and it simply reflected all the love he gave. Blessings always to your family all, and I say that your Spirit is alive. As you make the transition to something new I say "Namaste".

The Lofthouse Family,

Bill was my knight in shinning armour. He was always there when I needed a friend. He was a kind and gentle man with many friends but he made you feel as if you were the only one. Bill will remain in my heart forever!

Bill has moved to a higher place and is with his beloved wife, Gretchen. Together they are ready to build a bigger and better float as they smile down on us.

May your tears of sorrow become memories of joy.

Love,

Dear Chris, Michele and Family,
I was so sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad. He was very special to so many people. His strong personality, ability to work with people and kindness are characteristics I will remember most about him. Much of Glendale's participation in the parade was due to him and your company.

He will be missed but not forgotten. God bless you all.

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.
