Billie Hinkle Obituary

Billie Lou Bender Hinkle was born November 10, 1929, to Jean Addison Bender and William Eugene Bender, in Dayton, Ohio. She attended Van Cleve Elementary School and Colonel White and Fairview high schools in Dayton. After graduating high school, she worked as the activities director for Goodwill Industries and attended the University of Dayton. She married the love of her life, Lorne Ray Hinkle, at Grace Methodist Church in Dayton on April 19, 1952. Billie and Lorne lived in California, North Carolina, Ohio, Missouri, Louisiana, and Massachusetts before settling in Colorado Springs in 1964. Billie worked at Wasson High School from 1977 to 1991, where she served 12 years as the cheerleading sponsor and was awarded Teacher of the Year in 1985. She worked at Emerson Junior High from 1991 until her retirement in 1998. Both at Wasson and Emerson, Billie gave her love, support, and special gift of encouragement to hundreds of students, many of whom still think of her as their "second mom." She has been a member of Grace and St. Stephens Episcopal Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colorado Springs. She will be remembered fondly for her infectious laugh, heartwarming smile, upbeat attitude, and passionate devotion to the Denver Broncos. Billie was preceded in death by her son Thomas William Hinkle and his wife Jenny. She is survived by her husband Lorne Ray ("Hink") Hinkle; sister Bobbie Pequignot and husband Tom; children Cynthia Lynn Hinkle, Lisa Jean Hinkle, James Lorne Hinkle and wife Lani; and grandchildren Colby Douglas Dean and wife Heather, Andrew Marc Dean, Julie Anne Larimer, Samuel James Hinkle, and Elena Carroll Hinkle, and great grandchild Tanna Dean-all of whom will cherish their memories of Billie, and will carry her love and spirit on in their hearts. Services will be held on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace and St. Stephens Episcopal Church followed by Inurnment at Grace Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Grace & St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Memorial Garden Fund, 601 N. Tejon St. Colorado Springs, CO 80903.

My beautiful Mom, it has been nearly two years since your passing and I miss you so so so much! You are my best friend and the void left is unbearable...no one will ever take your place. You always listened, understood me, and willing to give your all to make things better given life's ups and downs...as you did with so many people, in all walks of life. The world is, without question, a better place because you gave so much to so many. I sure miss your advice, talking to you, and watching how you light up a room by just being there. You would have loved your service; the Church was full to capacity and the eulogy was given by your Catholic Church...a first that anyone has heard, two denominations cooperating to celebrate your life!
(What a joy, I was so proud!) But that's not surprising since you touched so many lives; a plethora of friends expressed how blessed they felt to have known you! How lucky I am, I cherish your memory daily. I am fortunate and grateful to have parents like you and Dad. Dad misses you terribly, but he keeps it mostly to himself. You know him, the love of his life has, as he says, "left him for a better man." He's still funny, onery, and strong but my heart aches for him as I (and many people) will never know the power and magic of true love longevity. Bless his heart! Life is somewhat different now, but we are managing as best as possible. I just wanted to express my thoughts to you before the guestbook closed for good and no more entries permitted. Please pass on my love to my best brother, Tom, and his wife, Jenny...I'm sure they were happy to see you. As with you, I miss Tom too. I know my life would have been different had he been here to guide me through some of the rough patches, and share the good times. He was hilarious, and you are/were, well, absolutely WONDERFUL! Someday we all will be joining you as well, together again for laughs and quality time -- but in the meantime, know that we will cherish your memory, know you are loved deeply, missed enormously, and thankful you touched our hearts so profoundly. God bless you. I LOVE YOU, MOM!

I can't begin to say it all, except that Bille was a lot of fun and exhibited a sensitivity that it'd be good for me to emulate. All my best to Loren, Cindy, Lisa and Jimmy!

Mr Hinkle and Hinkle family:
I feel completely honored to have known Mrs Hinkle through her energetic and motivational leadership and support of our Emerson and Mitchell football games, basketball games and fund raising efforts. (Still smiling of working side by side with her during a car wash fundraiser for our senior day trip - Mitchell class of '79!).
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mr. Hinkle, I did not know until reading today's Gazette online that you lost Billie. It was so good to see both of you and your granddaughter last Christmas at Panino's. Fate brought us together that night and while I'm sad it will be the last time I will see your wife, I'm glad we all had the time to chat about what's been going on all these years. If you need to talk to another guy who has also lost his dear wife, please contact me.

Billie was such a tremendous lady! I feel lucky to have had so many fun times and special memories with her in cheerleading at Wasson. She was always smiling and had a great sense of humor. She was known as "Mom Hink" and was truly that to so many. She will be dearly missed and my thoughts and prayers go out to Hink and the rest of her lovely family. I was a student at Wasson from 1985 to 1988 (nice to hear from other alums in the guest book). As a member of the cheerleading squad, Billie took such good care of all of us girls - she was our second mom. Later, she attended many of our weddings and baby showers, so watched us all grow up into beautiful and strong women. Her guidance helped with this as she was such a positive influence through the critical teenage years. Her family is in my thoughts and prayers.

To All of the Hinkle Family,

To the Hinkle family: Billie was my first friend at Wasson High School when I began teaching there in 1986. I will always remember her smile, her roller skates, and Billie and Hink jitterbugging in a talent show. I was so blessed to run in to her a few months ago. She was still vibrant and full of love. She will never be gone from my heart.

As a Wasson graduate (1985-1988) - and a student who remembers Mrs. Hinkle's smile, her enthusiasm, her strength (for a little lady), and her ability to encourage so many - she will certainly be missed. Keep smiling upon all of those students Mrs. Hinkle - you certainly made a difference in MY life. Prayers go out to the Hinkle family through this tough time - though know she's smiling down on all of you.

What an honor to have been a part of the Hinkle family. This only came about because Billie always welcomed one more. She became my extra mom in 1984. She lit up my life, she lit up any room she entered and I imaging her lighting up heaven as well. What a great lady. My heart is with your family.
