Billy Costello Obituary

KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) - Former World Boxing Council light welterweight champion Billy Costello, winner of his first 30 professional fights, has died of lung cancer. He was 55.

Longtime friend Joe LaLima says Costello died Wednesday at a hospital in Kingston, Costello's hometown.

Costello was 40-2 over a 20-year career that began in 1979. He won the WBC light welterweight championship in 1984 with a 10th-round technical knockout of Bruce Curry, then defended the title three times over the next year.

Costello lost the title to "Lightning" Lonnie Smith in an eighth-round technical knockout in 1985. His only other loss as a pro came to Alexis Arguello in 1986.

After retiring from fighting, he had worked in construction and with young people in his hometown.

There was no immediate information on funeral arrangements.

To Mr. & Mrs. William Costello Sr.:
Thank you for your son William "Billy" Costello Jr. His personality and passion for his love of Boxing brought him to the top as a World Champion. His battle against an undefeatable disease, showed all, that he still had the strength and courage to fight. "Billy Costello, Our Champ" will remain in our hearts forever. Thank you for putting "COSTELLO, N.Y." on the map.

To the Costello family...My heartfelt condolences go out to your entire family along with the circle of friends that Billy acquired. I grew up in California watching Billy on TV and was a huge fan of his, and then from time to time I would go online to see what he was up to with all of his volunteer work etc., the fact that he came back to live in Kingston to help others when he could have bought a house and lived anywhere else shows the kind of character that he had. I found out this morning that the Lord requested Billy's services, and Billy accepted. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this very difficult time, may God Bless. R.I.P. Billy.

In the mid-70's, I was a highschool kid in Monticello, NY. My dad used to take us to the occasional fights held at Monticello Raceway, which usually had stables of fighters from Floyd Patterson's and other's gyms. We clearly remembered seeing Billy score a 40-second knock-out, and knowing there was a professional future. We were thrilled to later follow his career. Rest in Peace Billy...
