Sypher
Billy "Bill" M. Sypher
August 2, 1930 - May 26, 2018
Bill Sypher, 87, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away on May 26, 2018. Bill was born to Charles and Inez Sypher in Bend, Oregon, where he was raised with his three siblings. His family moved to Fountain, Colorado where he graduated high school in 1949. From January 1950-54 Bill served in the United States Air Force. His tour of duty included Naknek, Alaska and Thule, Greenland.
Upon his honorable discharge, Bill attended the University of Arkansas earning his BSBA, and taught high school business courses for six years in Arkansas, then Colorado. In 1963 he received a one-year teaching contract in Argentia, Newfoundland. From there he was awarded a two-year contract in Majuro, Marshall Islands where he met and married his first wife, Eleanor Tarlow, in May, 1965.
Their respective careers took them to Denver, Colorado where Bill taught at Denver Woman's College. His love of the islands moved them to Ponce, Puerto Rico where he taught high school business courses from 1970-73. They returned to the continental U.S. with Bill being awarded a contract as principal at Crowley County High School in Ordway, Colorado, a position he held for two years. From 1975-81, Bill served as Superintendent of Schools for the Crowley County School District. In 1981 Bill was approached and offered the position of Assistant Superintendent at East Otero School District in La Junta, Colorado, a position he could not refuse. His wife, Eleanor, passed away in July, 1990. He retired from education in July, 1991 and moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado.
It was here that he dated and married his second wife, Wanda Anderson, in April, 1994. Bill and Wanda traveled a great deal during their marriage, from Oregon to Florida, to such exotic locations as Thailand, Australia, Germany, and China. Bill valued his volunteer position at Memorial Hospital, and was deeply proud of his many years of service as a Mason and a Shriner.
Bill is survived by his wife, Wanda Anderson Sypher; his daughters, Jennifer (Sypher) Horn and Valerie (Sypher) Cox; step-daughters, Kathleen Palomba-Ouellette and Robyn Frazier-Deutsch; ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs on Friday, June 1 at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, c/o Colorado Springs Shrine Club.
