Brent Higgins Obituary

Brent Higgins, our love, our rock, and our inspiration, reached for his last summit on July 15, 2006. He was fortunate enough to leave this world doing what he loved best, climbing. We only wish it had not been so soon. Brent was a true love, friend, and partner to his wife, Shannon, and a joyful, loving father to their baby son, Canyon, who will miss him more than words can express. Brent was a devoted and loyal friend to everyone he met, and he touched many hearts and lives in countless ways. His passion and sheer enthusiasm for life is an inspiration to us all and will never be forgotten by his many close climbing partners, friends, and family. Brent was born in Missoula, MT.,a on November 30, 1976. His feet were never still, even as a child, going through shoes in a matter of weeks. He was a natural athlete who mastered the bicycle at age four. He graduated from Delta High School in Delta, CO., and earned his Bachelors degree in Physics at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, CO., where he met his wife. They were married in Grand Junction on August 13, 2000. He earned his Masters degree from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs where he made many friends. He loved his family, climbing in all forms, back-country skiing, running, travel, fixing up houses, and outdoor adventure in just about any form. He had great passion for the desert, and the sandstone and sage will miss him dearly. He was gifted in every aspect of life and never wasted one precious moment of it. No one who knew him will forget his 1,000 watt smile and absolute zest for life and adventure. He is survived by his wife Shannon; his son, Canyon; his father, Cory Higgins; his mother, Millie Higgins; his sister, JoAnna Hayes; his brother, Joel Higgins; and his grandmother, Lucille Young. He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glenn and Margaret Stone, his brother-in-law, Christopher Stone; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins; and his faithful black labs: Hank and Abby. Brent's family wishes to give special thanks to his many climbing partners and the members of the San Juan County, La Plata County, Mesa County, and Ouray County Search and Rescue Teams, as well as the La Plata County Colorado Mountain Rangers, the K-9 SAR Team, New Air Helicopter, Civil Air Patrol, L3 Communications, Denver and Rio Grande Narrow Gauge Railroad, Tall Timber Resort, friends, and family members who gave their all in our search for Brent. Your outpouring of support, hope, and energy was overwhelming and will never be forgotten. A service is planned for 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2006, at Elmwood Cemetery in Fruita, Colorado, located at 1175 17-1/4 Road (North Mesa Road). In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Colorado Federal Credit Union at 51628 Road, Grand Junction, CO., 81501 for the Brent Higgins Search and Rescue Fund. Goodbye sweet Babe and Dada. You are always with us. You reached for the stars and may they hold you safe until we see you again.

He was my dad. I never really new him well because of his passing but I've learned so much through all the amazing stories his friends told me and what my mom told me. This page gives him justice, but I wish I could add some of the stories to make it better. I'm glad I'm here to remember him even if I never fully new him. Damn toddler brain... Also, to the guy who said I was his daughter in the other memories, I'm a guy with long hair just like my dad had just so you know hahaha. Thanks to everyone sharing the memories! If you have something more personal to say then I guess you can find my instagram @pinmancanyan. I would love to hear more about dad from you.

Brent’s vitality, vigor, and love were unending like the blue of the sky. It gives me much solace to have the belief that his spirit has been released around us and floats with the breeze. When you long to be near him, speak to the wind. I believe he will hear you. When you are in a beautiful place, stop and be still for a moment. I believe Brent is there, sharing in the beauty, and quiet solitude of the moment with you. He has become part of the beautiful places he loved.

Let his life be a lesson and a charge to us all to be better people. I hope we all can remind ourselves on a daily basis, to live life to the fullest as Brent did. I hope we can learn from his example to appreciate the gifts of the earth, to be in awe of the beauty that surrounds us, and to love unabashedly. Brent’s life was one well lived, albeit too short. The earth is a richer, more beautiful place because his footprints were left here.

Brent was an extraordinary individual and gave 150% to everything he did. He worked hard, played harder, and loved his family intensely. For those of us that were fortunate enough to know him, he made our world a better place. He touched us all with his passion for life and there will forever be a part of his spirit within us. Brent’s legacy lives on in many hearts, especially within Shannon and his “little wild man” Canyon.

Brent will be deeply missed. The world lost one of its best that day.

I had the pleasure of working closely with Brent for about a year. He was so kind and caring and always knew how to make his co-workers feel good. He was also a very hard worker and talented engineer. Not long ago, he was telling me how wonderful it was to be a father and how he couldn't imagine his life without little Canyon. Brent, you will be truly missed. Shannon and Canyon, my prayers and thoughts are with you.

The most enduring memory I have of Brent was a discussion with a co-worker who couldn't understand Brent's eternally cheerful disposition. He said he wanted to go over and push him down just to watch him get up, dust himself off and say "Heh, heh, heh. It looks like you've pushed me over here." And then carry on his merry way.

Ironically, it was such an accurate description for someone who so misunderstood Brent. It took a lot to make Brent dislike someone, and only those incurable cynics of the human condition were anything but bouyed by his goofy, lovable presence. His enormous strength and confidence could easily brush aside the slings and arrows of those who would casually push him down. He had a lot to do in his short time on Earth and had no time to waste on such minor foils.

Shannon and Canyon,

I am so sorry for your loss. I have been blessed knowing Brent as a friend and fellow co-worker and he will be sorely missed. There will never be a time when I return to my hometown of Moab that Brent will not be in my thoughts. So long good friend. Until we meet again.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in the death of your husband. I was a member of the backpacking group that found Brent's camera. On Friday morning, I inserted his memory card into my camera and saw pictures of you and your son and then a picture of Brent. We compared the picture on my screen w/ a picture we got from the sheriff's dept before we left. We immediately set out to flag down rescue workers and a helicopter landed w/in minutes. I am glad that we were able to play a small part in the recovery of his remains and bring closure to you and your family. On the Monday we set out, one of our group prayed that God would help us find him or help us find something that would help find him. God is good and will help sustain you and your family in the coming years.

Brent, we will miss your smile, your enthusiasm, your knowledge and your zest for life. You touched many people. I don't think I've met anyone who was always so positive even in stressful situations. You always put people at ease. I am grateful to be your friend. Rest in peace.
