Brian Patrick McMahon Sr. obituary

Brian McMahon Obituary

Brian Patrick McMahon Sr. USAF Lt COL (RET) died June 30, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 20, 1935 in New York City to Mildred and Thomas McMahon. Brian was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, storyteller, author, humorist, educator, patriot, and purveyor of knowledge. He was clear and eloquent about priorities, strong in his catholic faith, and dedicated to family and to standing for what you believe is right. Brian was a 1957 graduate of the University of Notre Dame. A decorated combat pilot, he flew the F-4 and among others, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, a Bronze Star, and Air Medals with 9 Oak Leaf Clusters for the numerous missions flown during two deployments in Vietnam. Brian was the consummate expert of operations; tactical, educational, and base infrastructure. His expertise in planning was instrumental in dealing with tactical aspects of the European Command, including introducing the F-16 aircraft there, and at the Air Force Academy - including the 1776 Bicentennial Celebration. He co-authored three books with his father (Jink, Cornered at Six, and Mayday), many articles, government publications, stories for family and friends, and beautiful poetry. Brian was a member of MOAA, the QBs, the Knights of Columbus, and Order of the Daedalians. He is survived by his wife of 32 years Sean Lou (Carr) and their eight children: Cathie Williamson (David), Brian McMahon Jr. (Valerie), Jeff Jowdry, Sean McMahon (Kelly), Sharron Mason (Stephen), Donald McMahon, Gretchen Bitner (Jay), and Michael McMahon (Kelley), thirteen grandchildren: Ryan, Siobahn, Daniel, Amanda, Matthew, Katie, Chelsea, Kayla, Andy, Aaron, Ethan, Devon, and Megan, and three great grandchildren: Jaylen, Anthony, and Vincent. We will miss his grace, guidance and light that brightened each day, but are happy knowing he's in heaven and can finally ask the questions in his God Book. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 11:00am at the Air Force Academy Community Center Chapel. A Reception will follow immediately. Non-military guests should enter the Academy through the south gate entrance at the I25 Academy Blvd exit.
