Bud Shepard Obituary

"Bud", Omer F. Shepard passed away July 31, 2012. Bud was the son of Ben F. and Melba P. (Harris) Shepard. Bud was born March 26, 1930 in Colorado Springs. He is survived by his wife Barbara (Joslyn) and two sons, Robert (Carolyn) Shepard and Rick (Judy) Shepard. They have six grandchildren, Lori (Chris) Howey, Ty (Lori) Shepard, Jeff (Jenna) Shepard, Amy (J.D.) Crouse, Brandon Shepard, and Sarah Shepard; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Bruce (Anne) Shepard and three nieces. When Bud was a boy, his Dad (Ben) operated neighborhood grocery stores in Colorado Springs. Bud was always quick to remark that those years working in the stores and meeting the public contributed to his success later in life. Bud was 16 and Barbara 15 when they got married. Bud then became involved in the construction business with his father-in-law, Gordon Joslyn. During that time he met some of the successful home builders in the community. Bud decided that was what he wanted to do. He started Shepard Homes in 1950. He always appreciated all the help that was given to him along the way--from the successful builders that taught him the business to all of the wonderful people that worked for Shepard Homes through the years. He was president of the Colorado Springs Home Builders Association in 1957. He was the first president of the Colorado State Home Builders Association in 1974. Bud served on the executive committee of the National Home Builders Association. From the beginning of his career, Shepard Homes built over 3500 houses, thus Bud played a part in the growth and development of Colorado Springs. He served on the planning commission and the contractor's board. In 1999 Bud and his brother Bruce were awarded the Pikes Peak Founder's Award. Bud was active in the Pikes Peak Range Riders becoming a member in 1963 and made 25 rides. He was the president of the Range Riders in 1975, and was awarded the Silver Spur Award in 2003. Bud always said the "bright" spot in his life was the girl he married! Barbara stood beside him for 66 years. Bud knew he could come home and get 'refueled.' Bud always said the key to a successful life is who you marry. Bud accepted Jesus as his Savior at a young age. Jesus was always the center of his life. Bud was a man of integrity who kept his word. He was generous and caring. The family going to church regularly was very important to Bud. Bud and Barbara made many life long friends at church. The family finds great comfort and strength knowing that Bud is in heaven, realizing the promises of Jesus Christ. A celebration of Bud's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., August 14, 2012, at Woodmen Valley Chapel, 290 East Woodmen Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado. It will be followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers you can make a contribution to the Hospice of Arizona, 19820 N. 7th Avenue Suite 30, Phoenix, Arizona 85027 or to a scholarship fund for the young people who served Bud and Barbara the last five years at The Gray Hawk Classic Residents Foundation, 7501 E. Thompson Peak Pky #100, Scottsdale, Arizona 85255-3887.

Donny was a great kid growing up in Hawthore, California. I lived a cross the street from the famlies and his Mother and I were great friends. I loved the whole family, and was very lonely when they moved to Colorado. Don was a bright kid growing up and later in life and loved his job. He will be missed by all. Hazel Smith

Dear Barb, Bob and Rick
Your father was a very special friend as are you all and Doug and I love you always in our Lord Jesus Christ. Now we look forward to joining him in heaven when the Lord calls us home. I don't think you know this but Doug took a job in Maryland with the Federal Government on the Patuxtent Naval Air Base. He is a Public Affairs Officer and we have been here for three years. That is why we will very much miss the service at Woodmen Valley Church. We pray this message will let you know how much we understand you miss him and I remember all the wonderful Bible studies we had with us all. Love in Christ.....I too remember what everyone else speaks to of things that go way back:) Karen and Doug Abbotts (Guy Wallace's oldest daughter)

My grandmother worked with Bud for 30+ years. I will always remember his generosity to my family. I have so many memories. He was one of kind. They don't make men like that anymore.

Bud will always be a "special" friend and brother in Christ. Truly, life and death are about God our Creator and Savior. Bud was a business associate of my husband, Ken,for many years. When Ken accepted Christ as his Savior, Bud and his dear wife, Barbara, were constant and encouraging to our walk with the Lord. Bud and Ken are now at "home" together in the presence of the Lord. Praise God for His faithfulness.
I. Thess. 4:13-18.

I am very sorry to hear of Bud's passing. I had the pleasure of first meeting Bud as a very young boy who was a clerk in Ben's grocery store at the corner of Cache La Pouder St and Royer St, in CS. That friendship continued later in life as Bud became a builder and developer.
Bud was one of a kind, the finest and most honest businessman you would ever hope to be associated with. I am very happy to have know him all these years and will keep his memory always.

My sincere condolences to the family.

God turned another page in the book of our memories. We met Bud and his father at the North Star Grocery in 1945 where my parents shopped. Bud and I never became Buddies and I probably knew Bruce as a classmate (CSHS 1949) All that I ever knew and heard about Bud and his family was the best. We pray God's Mercy and Grace upholds each of you now.

Barbara, Rick, Bob, Bruce and all of Bud's family, I am so sorry for your loss of Bud's presence from your day to day living. The loss of such a great hubby, dad, grandparent, brother, and a tremendous loss to our Pikes Peak region community. A fine, fine gentleman, a humble man to everyone that had the opportunity to know him. I feel blessed to have known Bud for well over 50 long years. He will be missed by many. We are holding you, his family in our prayers. May the good Lord comfort you at this difficult time. "We worship God through his Spirit, and our pride is in Christ Jesus. We do not put trust in ourselves or anything we can do..." Philippians 3:3
