Bud Yates Obituary

Uncle" Bud Yates, Local business owner of Pikes Peak Tattoo, passed away August 14, 2006 after a tragic motorcycle accident in Roswell, N.M. while doing what he loved. Bud was born January 18, 1960 in Chicago Heights, IL., to Bud and Marie Porter Yates. Bud is survived by his "Beautiful Bride" Brinda Marie (Pennington) Yates; his beloved Bugzy Malone Yates; his mother, Marie Porter Sloan; his loving step-father, Doyle J. Sloan; his two brothers: Snake (Jackie) Yates of Colorado Springs and Daniel J. (Sherry) Yates of Canon City; and by three sisters: Carolyn (David) Cummings of Colorado Springs, Donna Kay (Tim) Smith of Oklahoma and Lori (Ken) Taylor of Colorado Springs. Uncle Bud is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; along with those who adopted Bud as their uncle, and so many friends that they cannot be counted. Bud attended Manheim All American High School in Germany from 1975-1977 and graduated from Lawton High School, Lawton OK in 1978. Bud began his tattoo career in 1978 and opened his first tattoo studio at 729 ½ West Colorado Avenue in Colorado Springs CO. Bud later opened three tattoo studios that were his livelihood and passion. The original Pikes Peak Tattoo at 519 South Nevada in 1987, which was later, moved in June 1997 to the current 902 North Circle Location, one at 2924 Wood Avenue established in July 2000, and Steel City Tattoo at 1322 East Hwy 50 Bypass in Pueblo established 1996. In addition to his beloved tattoo career, Uncle Bud was an entrepreneur under Yates Enterprises, with a variety of ventures he delved in. Uncle Bud was an active member in our community and touched many lives. Just a few of the many organizations he was affiliated with include The National Tattoo Association and is their current President, The Iron Butt Association, Harley Owners Group, Corvette Club, The Gold Wing Club and Honda Touring Club. Bud and Brinda were married August 26, 1984 in Manitou Springs, Colorado at the Eastern Star Masonic Temple with just a few friends and family. There will be a private family gathering at Swan Law Funeral Directors, with a Celebration of Remembrance held following the family gathering at a future date to be announced on the "MeM" website (www.mem.com). Friends may go on line to www.mem.com to leave messages or tributes for the family that will be displayed later at the Celebration of Remembrance. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the "Uncle Bud Memorial Scholarship Fund" sent to the National Tattoo Association, 485 Business Park Lane, Allentown, PA 18109 or online at www.nationaltattooassociation.com.

Dearest Bud, I knew you in Germany when you were "Buddy" and we reconnected after you became "Uncle Bud" ... a lifetime in such a short time it seems. You will always remain in my heart. Thank you for the smiles back then, when we were just kids, and thank you for allowing them to still remain strong even today, in reflection. Ride that "hog" proud my sweet friend ... and I'll see ya when the wind shifts :)

Uncle Bud, You were a wonderful man. First of all, thank you for being there to talk to while we were growing up. You always had a positive outlook in regards to what was going on in our lives. You helped fill the "void" of a dad being around while we were growing up, and I truly appreciate that. I will never forget Aunt Brinda taking us school shopping and hanging out when you two came to visit. You two were always there if any of us needed you, and I appreciate that from the bottom of my heart. You will truly be missed. We love you forever in our memories and hearts -- Adam, Carolyn Marie, Mason and Colin Johnson of Yukon, Oklahoma

Uncle Bud was my 21st bday present-well, his ink was anyway. That was nearly 15 years ago, and not once in all that time did I ever find Bud without a huge grin on his face. Seems to me he knew the rule about bringing enough for everyone. His absense will be felt for a very long time, but so will his presence. Ride free, my friend, ride free.

I met Uncle Bud 15 years ago and he always talked about his beautiful Bride and he always had his pain stick (bat) handy for the one who would whine while getting work done :). Bud was always smiling and always having a good life..I aspire to be just like that..knowing what and who is important. I can't believe he is gone. My thoughts, prayers and love go out to his family and friends...Uncle Bud..you will be greatly missed

Uncle Buddy,

Though we will miss you tremendously, I know you are in a better place. In a sense, you are fortunate. You get to leave this crazy and distructive world earlier than some. I still miss you though and will always miss you until the day we meet again.

Love, your niece Samantha Nell McMillan Smith

Bud was a great guy and we spent many an afternoon chatting it up when I worked downstairs from him at Silicon Valley Connection. Afterwards, standard trips to Coal Mine Dragon would be the way to end the day and have a great meal with great friends. His personality shined and he was a good friend that will be missed. My deepest sympathies go out to Brinda. Know that Bud was loved by many and that he will be remembered.

Bud my friend,I miss you sorely. There is now a huge void in my heart that I hope time will heal. One never gets over losing someone close, they just learn to live with it. Your memory lives on in the heart of mine and countless others. Good-by for now my friend and brother. I still have a tattoo we didn't finish. That's ok, you can finish it when I find you in eternity.

I met Buddy in 1975 he was my upstairs neighbor in Germany,he was learning to play the drums and he could make my dinner jump across my table every night as he was only allowed to play during that hour. Bud was a great teenager and a awesome man. I dearly love his family and my heart breaks for them. He will be missed greatly. My prayers and love to all his family.

My deep sorrow for Uncle Bud's family. Uncle Bud was one of those people that when you met him, you felt like he knew you for twenty years....a real class act. I met him in 2005 at the Iron Butt National Meet in Omaha, NE. We swapped stories and emails throughout the year. I was to meet Bud in Denver for a "beer swap". I'm very saddened by his passing and wish him clear roads and weather on the highways above.
