I didn't know Carl personally, so I knew him mostly from the podium. He was one of the best of the New Left, and certainly inspired me every time I heard him. He also wrote and sang one of the greatest anti imperialist songs of all time: the little-noticed but profound Le Chinoise. He made us better than we were, and we are less now that he is gone.

As a 1970 graduate of Revere High School and an anti-Vietnam War activist, I was proud to tell people that the most successful graduate of Revere was Carl Oglesby. He was an inspiration to many of us of that generation and I am sorry to hear of his passing.

May the God of all comfort, comfort the family and friends of Carl Oglesby. Psalm 34:18 assures us that the God of all comfort is near those broken at heart and the one crushed in spirit he saves.

Carl's influence as a guest in residence at Urbana, IL in the late '80s was profound. He called them like he saw them, and followed where his values and his perceptions led him without regard for anyone's sacred icons. How many in politics today can say the same?

I did not know Carl well but his writngs inspired me and i first met him in Austin ,Texas at an SDS convention. Later, when i was in jail for anti-work stuff at Kent State, we coresponded. He was very gracious and supportive. Just my brief encounter with Carl in the early 70's gave me a life long respect for this man. I offer my condolences to his freinds and family. He has carried us forward to a more human world.

I have been fortunate to call Carl one of my closest friends since 1973. His love and friendship was unwavering through the decades. I just got off the phone with a mutual friend - Harvey Yazijian- and we are both still stunned by how fast all of this was. I spoke just weeks ago with Carl and he was upbeat and had so enjoyed his trip back to Cambridge and re-connecting with so many old pals.
My thoughts and prayers are with Aron, Shay and Caleb today- his wonderful kids.
I thank Barbara- his partner of the last three years -for loving and taking care of "our" Carl. A brilliant light has gone out, but he will remain in our hearts forever. RIP dear friend. My life was made better by knowing you.
