Carl Rust Obituary

Major Carl H. Rust, 82, retired U.S. Army, died on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at his home in Jacksonville, FL. Born February 19, 1927 in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of Carl Emil Rust and Gertrude Drittenbass Rust Sampson (Swiss Trudy). Upon early completion of graduation requirements at Pearl River (NY) High School, he enlisted in the Army during the last months of World War II. He was wounded in combat during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster. In subsequent years, he served at various posts in Japan, Europe and the U.S. before settling with his family in Security, CO. Upon retirement from the Army, Carl started an insurance business in Colorado Springs. The last years of his life were spent touring the U.S. and Mexico and supervising the building of his recently completed dream home in Jacksonville. Major Rust is survived by four children: Carl A. Rust (Nancy) of Woodland Park, CO; Paul Rust of Colorado Springs, CO; Marianne Rust Crandall of North Carolina and Martin Rust (Charla) of Colorado Springs, CO. Predeceased by three sons: Jay Christopher Rust, Michael Rust and Joseph Rust. He is also survived by a brother, Howard Rust of Olive Bridge, NY and a sister, Gertrude (Trudy) Koser of Rhinebeck, NY. In Jacksonville, Rust was a member of American Legion Post 137 where until recently he was active in volunteer work. No funeral services are planned at this time. Memorial donations may be made to the Baptist Cancer Institute, 1235 San Marco Blvd. Suite 304, Jacksonville, FL 32207 in honor of Dr. Augusto Villegas, MD and the compassionate dedicated staff at that facility.
