He is also survived by his 19 grandchildren. Carman who went by "Speed" most of his adult life was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars and earned multiple awards for valor including the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and four Bronze Stars (V). Speed was born in Mobridge, SD in 1932. He grew up in South Dakota and North Dakota and graduated from High School in Lawton, ND. He enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard in 1949 and was called to active service not long after for the Korean War. He attained the rank of Tech Sergeant (E6) and then attended the US Army Prep school and West Point. He graduated from West Point in 1957 and served another 18 years on active duty. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1968, the rank at which he retired. After retiring from the military he was an entrepreneur in Colorado and Arizona and was involved in numerous business ventures before finally retiring at the age of 65. He enjoyed traveling around the world, being around animals of all kinds, farming, hunting, fishing (generally anything outdoors) as well as being around his children and grandchildren. Speed was truly loved and will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held on the evening of 1 December 2011 at a location to be determined. He will be interred at Fort Logan National Cemetery on 2 December at 12:00 with full military honors.

I remember Speed as he was friends with my dad Wes Shull. They served in Vietnam together and stayed friends for a long time. Our families used to get together and have dinner often when we lived in Northern Virginia. My dad always spoke highly of Speed. I have fond memories of him and our family get-togethers. I know it's been years, but I just saw this post and wanted to leave a message. So sorry for your loss.

What a privilege to have known Speed. We were EM together at the USMA Prep School and ended up in the same company (K-1) at the Academy..He was quite a "hive" (Cadet slang for a brain) and wore stars on his collar to represent his academic prowess. Have many fond memories..
