Catherine "Cappy" Calder Obituary

Catherine "Cappy" Calder of Colorado Springs died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on December 13, 2013. She was born on December 28, 1924 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Jessie Kirkland Menary and Robert Victor Menary, a former member of the El Pomar Foundation Board of Directors and President of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo from 1939-1963.

Many will remember Cappy for her grace, kindness, and dignity. Cappy appreciated beauty in all things, and was a nationally recognized floral arranger who also ran an interior design business. An active member of the Broadmoor Garden Club since 1966, Cappy's flower arranging talents earned her recognition as a National Flower Show Judge for the Garden Club of America, and she frequently traveled to major shows throughout the U.S. For her service, the Garden Club of America awarded her its Medal of Merit in 2003 for being a compelling inspiration to its members. In addition to her work with the Garden Club, Cappy provided thousands of hours of volunteer service at Penrose Hospital and served on the Board of Directors of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo following in the footsteps of her father.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Michael (Kathleen) of Santa Ana, California, Bob of Leadville, Bill (Fallie) of Portland, Oregon, Catherine Fettig (Doug) of Portland, Oregon, and James (Cathy) of Denver, her grandchildren, Ben, Chloe, Will, Kailee and Ashley Calder and Pierce and Calder Fettig, her sister Ginger Karr of Lutherville, Maryland, and Ginger's children Francie Schneider of Honolulu and Zandy Kennedy of Lutherville, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband, John Calder, and grandson, Parker Fettig.

Contributions in Cappy's honor can be made to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo or Penrose-St. Francis Hospital.

To Bob and your family, My sincere sympathies to all of you for the passing of your mother. I remember her visiting the Broadmoor Florist & Greenhouse when I worked there. And remember telling her that I had a crush on you at Cheyenne Mtn. Jr. High and was too shy to tell you! She laughed... May God Bless her and all of you at this sorrowful time.

Cappy never knew a stranger. Always had a smile and working with her at Penrose as a volunteer was special...so kind and gracious. Heaven added an angel during this blessed Christmas season. Prayers of comfort to her family...she was a treasure.
