Charles Byerly Obituary

Charles Hershey Byerly passed away October 28, 2006 in Colorado Springs. He was born September 20, 1927 in Lancaster, PA to Dr. Paul R. and Helen H. Byerly. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Barbara; a brother, Paul; and many nieces and nephews. Charles served in the United States Army, joining the occupation forces in Japan after World War II. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in architecture and practiced architecture until 1994. He was instrumental in the restoration of the 1903 El Paso County Courthouse, now the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. In his younger years he enjoyed racing his sports car. Later he enjoyed attending vintage sports car races and twice served as president of the Pikes Peak Chapter of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America. He was an excellent tennis player and played on both his high school and college teams. Despite the ravages of dementia, he held on to his wonderful sense of humor. Memorial contributions may be made to the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, 215 S. Tejon St., colorado Springs, 80903, the Alzheimer's Association of Colorado Springs, 2315 Bott Drive, Colorado springs, 80904, or a charity of your choice. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
