Charles Edward Holcomb Obituary

Charles Edward Holcomb, 88, of Laurel Park died Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Mission Hospital in Asheville. He was born on July 17, 1924 to the late Trafford and Mattie Shy Holcomb in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Sara Holcomb and his two brothers, William T. Holcomb and Jack W. Shy. Mr. Holcomb was a proud graduate of Colorado Springs High School and returned to Colorado Springs last year to attend his 70th year class reunion. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Colorado, and then furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin with a Master's Degree as well as a PHD in Chemical Engineering. Upon graduation, he began his career with DuPont that spanned over many cities throughout the United States. DuPont brought him and his family to Western North Carolina, where he retired in 1985. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, serving at the Battle of the Bulge; and while being stationed in Great Britain he met his future wife. He returned to the United States, and later married Margaret Sara Turnbull by Trans Atlantic Telephone on May 20, 1946. Survivors include one son, Brett Holcomb and his wife, Pat of Greenville, SC, a daughter Karen Holcomb of Annapolis, MD., beloved granddaughter, Pamela and her husband, Sgt. Carl Brown of Fayetteville as well as one sister, Helen Shy Browning of Colorado. A celebration of life will be held today, June 29, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at The Kedron Lodge, 229 Fifth Avenue West, Hendersonville. There will also be a Memorial Service conducted by the Rev. Jim McKinley on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at 3:00 P.M at The Unitarian Universalist Church of Hendersonville. Memorial donations may be directed to The Kedron Lodge, 229 Fifth Avenue West, Hendersonville, NC 28739 or to The Unitarian Universalist Church, 2021 Kanuga Road, Hendersonville, NC 28739. An online register book is available for family and friends by visiting www.thosshepherd.com. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center is in charge of arrangements.
