Charles Sakai Obituary

Charles Sakai succumbed to cancer after living in Colorado Springs for 20 years. He was dedicated to community service, especially on behalf of Veterans, mental health education, and grassroots politics. Born in Ewa, Hawaii, Charles earned two bachelors and one masters degrees, and served active duty in the U.S. Army from 1981-1998, receiving an honorable discharge. He was active in the El Paso County GOP. Devoted to people with mental illnesses, Charles worked tirelessly with the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) of Colorado Springs, co-founded the state DBSA organization and BrainStorm Career Services, served on the Colorado Mental Health Planning and Advisory Council, supported establishment of a mental health court, and advocated for better behavioral health care for Veterans. Charles was a teacher, volunteer employment counselor, assistant choir director, and editor of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stake newsletter. A memorial will be at DBSA's Faces of Recovery program Saturday, May 5 at 1:00PM. A family service is March 30 at the Punchbowl National Memorial Center, Oahu, Hawaii. Contributions in Charles' memory may be made to DBSA-CS, 2132 E. Bijou St, Suite 112, Colorado Springs, CO 80909.

In 2009, Charles and I were part of the Irving Village Community, a group that sought to re-purpose the Irving Middle School building in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Charles believed in me as a writer - publicly - and I am saddened to learn that this positive, uplifting and funny man is no longer with us. Gone but not forgotten.

I read the obituary of my friend, Charles Sakai, in the Gazette this morning. He was a man full of contradictions ...a Republican who spent much of his time looking out for people in need... A Morman of Japanese descent... a gentle soul who had spent almost twenty years in the Army ... and a man who loved to read the craziest stories I could write , and sanely discuss them over a cup of coffee. He would have enjoyed the idea that he had reached some measure of immortality, as he will be long remembered by those who loved him.

Charles was a dedicated volunteer for DBSA Colorado Springs, and I was privileged to have known him. May you rest in peace.
