Charlotte Alice Mitchell Murtha passed away peacefully on September 18, 2021, in Colorado Springs. She was surrounded by her family and was preceded in death by her son, James (Jim) and newborn twin daughters Jennifer and Janna. She was 94 and had just celebrated her 70th anniversary with her loving husband James (Jim). Charlotte is survived by her husband Jim, daughter Gayle Murtha Nevin and her husband Tom Van Dyke, daughter Michelle Murtha Guenther and her husband Stephen Guenther, grandson Sean Guenther, granddaughter Erin Guenther, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Charlotte was born in Burnham, Maine to Alba and Gertrude Mitchell as one of eight children. She attended Maine Central Institute and graduated from Thomas Business College in Waterville, Maine.
Charlotte raised three children while Jim served 22 years in the Army as a career officer. Following retirement from the military, Charlotte joined Jim on travels to the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia, the Bahamas, Amsterdam, London and Somalia, before returning to her roots in Maine. She and Jim returned to Colorado Springs, and she retired in 2006 from a twenty-year career in infant childcare. She never stopped taking care of others-it was her purpose in life.
Charlotte had the ultimate servant's heart. She lived by grace and was loved by so many. Her daughters often said that she was their angel on earth. She was a devoted mother and wife who never had an unkind word to say. She put the needs of others before her own, deflecting praise, to spotlight those whose lives she touched, and she was forever the optimist. Charlotte never missed a chance to say how blessed she was, even though she experienced tremendous personal loss throughout her life. Her innocent and trusting nature was an endearing source of joy for all who knew her. She had a special place in her heart for babies and animals and loved our beautiful state. Charlotte always said, "Anytime you can wake up on a beautiful day in Colorado, it doesn't get much better". She was one in ten million, our guiding light, and will be eternally missed.
Services will be held on Friday, October 22, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. A rosary will begin at 10:30 AM. A reception will follow at 1:00 PM, at the family residence in Colorado Springs.
