Cherie Hayes Obituary

Loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend of many passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 3, 2016.

Cherie was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on March 29, 1947 to Mel and Connie Hartwig.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of forty-eight years, Richard Harold Hayes and father, Melvon James Hartwig.

Survived by mother, Constance Louise Hartwig; her daughter, Kristin (Hayes) Newell; grandson, Keegan Newell; sisters, Linda (Hartwig) Denison and Connie (Hartwig) Dickson; and many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Cherie graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1965. In 1965-1966, she attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She next graduated from Upper Iowa College with a degree in Elementary Education. She received her Master's Degree in Middle School Education from the University of Northern Colorado. She received her Administration Master's Degree from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.

Cherie began her career teaching elementary school in Elgin, Illinois from 1968–1980. Upon the completion of her Middle School Master's Degree, she taught middle school in both Basalt & Glenwood Springs, Colorado. In 1994, Cherie & Rich moved to Colorado Springs, where she was an Associate Principal until she retired in 2004.

Memorial Service 3:00PM, Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Sunrise United Methodist Church, 2655 Briargate Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80920. Reception to follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Cherie's memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
