Cheryl McWhirter Obituary

Cheryl K. (Greenwood) McWhirter, a long-time resident of Ada, Oklahoma, has joined her Lord and Savior and her mom and dad in heaven.

Born 1957 in Topeka, Kansas, Cheryl grew up as an "Air Force brat" and traveled with her family from base to base including Forbes AFB, KS, Carswell AFB, TX, Ramstein AB, Germany, Boiling AFB, D.C., Hickam AFB, HI, MacDill AFB, FL and finally Peterson AFB, CO where her mom and dad decided to retire. She began her 10th grade year at Falcon High School and graduated salutatorian from Falcon in 1976, the last class to graduate from the original school building in Falcon. She earned a scholarship after high school to attend El Paso Community College, now named Pikes Peak Community College.

She moved to Ada, Oklahoma in 1983 where she raised her two sons and accumulated a huge number of friends! She worked at Commerce Finance in Ada beginning in 1989 as an Assistant Branch Manager then as Branch Manager.

Cheryl was a kind and sweet person with a giving soul who always thought of her family and friend's happiness before her own. No matter what kind of day she was having, she would always smile and be nice and gracious to people, both friends and strangers alike. In the numerous posts from friends on her Facebook page, the common theme was how much she cared for people, how generous she was with her time to help family and friends, and how she was a beacon of light for many going through tough times. Cheryl was never one to sit still - she was always on the go with different projects and helping out friends with theirs.

She loved attending Life Church in Oklahoma City, her dogs, doing crafts, scrapbooking, weekend excursions, any new adventures friends wanted to try, but most of all, she loved her family and spending time with her two grandchildren. She visited them in Hawaii this past October and still talked about how much fun she had with them during that trip; a trip we were so grateful that she got to go on before her illness.

She will be missed by family and friends dearly, but knowing that she is in heaven, absolutely happy with no suffering, lessens the hurt.

She is survived by her husband, Mark McWhirter of Ada, OK, sons Steven Campbell (Rachel) of Hickam AFB HI and Daniel Campbell of Ardmore, OK, grandchildren Ryan and Zoey Campbell, her brother Warren Greenwood, Jr. of Colorado Springs, CO and countless friends.

She was preceded in death by her dad Warren Greenwood, Sr. and her mom Dorothy Greenwood.

Services are pending in Ada, OK.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Cheryl's memory to the American Stroke Association at strokeassociation.org.
