Cindy Fowler Obituary

Cindy Fowler, 53, passed away Wednesday, February 29 after a courageous 4-year battle with breast cancer. Cindy was best known as a passionate and beloved community advocate, but her legacy as a loving mother and devoted wife are what she cherished the most. The motto she taught her daughter to live by was "what do you want to be remembered for?" Cindy will be remembered for the family she nurtured, the many lives she touched and inspired and her vision for a better future. Services are scheduled for Monday, March 5, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Temple Emanuel in Denver, 51 Grape St. A fourth-generation native of Denver, Cindy was born June 25, 1958 to Alan and Carol Groussman. She attended Cherry Creek High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from The University of California at Santa Barbara. Cindy was married to Chuck Fowler on April 7, 1984 in Denver and soon after they moved to Colorado Springs. Together they had a daughter, Emily. Cindy began her professional career as conference coordinator at the Cheyenne Mountain Conference Resort. She became the administrator at Temple Shalom before settling into her career as a consultant in sales, marketing and community relations for OfficeScapes. Over the years and simultaneously with her career, Cindy became deeply rooted in varying facets of the community serving on and working with boards and committees for various causes. They include the Junior League of Colorado Springs, Newborn Hope, the Chamber of Commerce, The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo and the American Heart Association, among others. She served as the chair of the Heart Ball, executive advisor for Newborn Hope and had great fun transforming her leadership skills and wardrobe from a city girl to a cowgirl as a director on The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo board. Cindy received many honors and awards over the years including the prestigious Chamber of Commerce 2010 ATHENA Award, and the Business Journal's Women of Influence. Cindy is survived by her husband, Chuck, and daughter, Emily and her fiancée David Sheldon; father, Alan, and his companion Elaine "DeDe" Sherman; a brother, Jon Groussman, and his wife, Robin Lamkins of Naples, Fla.; aunt and uncle Donna and Howard Lutz, cousins Gary Lutz and Margaret Johnson and Dr. Kevin Lutz and his wife Mollie, all of Denver; and in-laws Sen. Hugh and Shirley Fowler of Denver. She was preceded in death by her mother, Carol, and a brother, Justin. Cindy was deeply loved and cherished by her family and the many friends she had throughout her life. In honor of Cindy, donations can be made to her breast cancer charity, Cowgirls and Cocktails c/o Stockman's Bank, 601 N. Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.

Our community has lost almost as Chuck and Emily. I feel for you but also selfishly for Colorado Springs. What a loss we have all suffered. Cindy was a blessing to all who knew her and to many who didn't.

Effervescent and wonderful. Motivating and creative. Chuck and Emily -- words totally fail me as I try to describe Cindy as a mom at Chipeta – and a trusted friend. She represented the best in all of us and our whole community. What a privilege and joy to have worked with her even for a short while. She made us all better for knowing her.

I knew Cindy during her battle with cancer. She was a very special lady! I was blessed to be one of her therapists. Cindy was a loving, strong, lady that has left her mark in this world and will to be remembered for all she has done.
