Claire was born on October 5, 1938, in Galveston, Texas. She spent most of her childhood in East Texas before moving to New Iberia, Louisiana when she was 15 years old. After graduating from New Iberia High School in 1956, she married James C (Jimmie) Borel, also of New Iberia, on December 26, 1956. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Erding, Germany for the first of Jimmie's many Air Force assignments, eventually retiring in Colorado Springs, CO. Claire was very proud of her life as an Air Force Officer's wife and the years she worked in the Colorado College Bookstore and its Worner Campus Center.
Claire strived for morality and enjoyed the unique qualities of everyone she met. She felt blessed to have so many friends and acknowledged how each of them had contributed something important to who she was.
Claire passed peacefully in her sleep on July 1, 2024. She was preceded in death by her father, Peter Shray; mother, Martha Fouche Shray; and sister, Martha Shray Bradford. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, James, Lt. Colonel, USAF (retired); two sons, Jonathan and Matthew; two grandchildren, Jackson and Hannah; and her sister, Winnie Shray Lee.

I am writing this for my mother Ann Vellon. My mother, and Claire worked together ar Colorado College. The college hasn´t been the same since! My mother and Claire became fast friends away from work. Shopping eating out sitting on the back deck of Claire and Jimmies house In a cool breeze and a hot summer night, Sharing books and magazines, and an occasional movie. These are things they shared and enjoyed. Claire was ever giving. When Ann´s granddaughters husband was killed in the line of duty Claire and Jimmie opened their home to out of state family to stay until after the funeral. If we needed something and Claire knew about it, it was there. And Jimmy was her delivery guy. Claire was an open book, she was kind, caring, loving, and fun as a rubber crutch! She will be missed. In Ann´s 97-year-old head and heart Claire lives on.
