Claude Sullivan Obituary

Claude H. Sullivan, Jr., 93, passed away June 29, 2014, in Florence, CO. He was born in Perkins, Georgia to Claude H. and Fannie (Joyner) Sullivan on February 17, 1921.

Claude enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943, and was trained as a B-17 navigator. He flew 35 missions during WW2. After his discharge, he returned to the University of Georgia and completed his degree in Broadcast Journalism. While working in the broadcasting field in Thomson, GA, he met Ernestine Harrison and they were married in Thomson, Georgia on April 10, 1949.

Because he retained his commission after his discharge from the Air Corps, Claude was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict and served in the Vietnam War, as well as other bases in the United States, Germany, and Japan. He retired from the Air Force in 1970 with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Finally being free to answer to God's call to the ministry, Claude enrolled at the Illif School of Theology in Denver, CO, and graduated with a Masters of Divinity in 1978. He served several congregations in Colorado and was appointed to Florence United Methodist Church in 1988. He retired from the clergy in 1998. As an ordained minister, Claude was privileged to perform marriages of his daughters and grandsons, and the baptisms of his grandchildren and great grandsons.

In retirement, he was active in community service organizations and traveled the country with Ernie in their fifth-wheel trailer.

Claude is survived by his wife, Ernestine Harrison Sullivan; children, Susan (Walter) Weinberg, Claudia (Charles) Hoover, Laura (Michael) Lopata, and Deborah (Charles) Whitehead; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; niece, Ann Mathews Ramsey, several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sara Sullivan Mathews.

Memorial Service will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 19, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Cañon City, CO.

Memorial donations may be made to Sangre de Cristo Hospice, 1207 Pueblo Blvd. Way, Pueblo, CO 81004 or Florence United Methodist Church, PO Box 504, Florence, CO 81226.

We are glad that we had the chance to know Sully even though it was many years ago. He and Ernie were such strong supporters of St. Paul's UMC. Our sympathy goes out to the entire family.
