CSM Billy R. Gray
US Army (Retired)
Billy R. Gray passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Feb. 23, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 85. Bill was born on August 9, 1932 to Burney and Verna Gray in Ward, Arkansas.
Bill married Caroline Disbrow of Long Branch, NJ on April 1, 1955 in Killeen, Texas. They were married for 62 years and raised a wonderful family. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Caroline, their son Billy, and his sisters Bobbie Faye and Jeannette.
Bill is survived by his sister, Patsy Gartman, Sheridan, Arkansas, loving daughters, Kate Gray, Tacoma, WA, Charis Klauck (John) Schertz, TX, Tracy Harrison (Oliver), Colorado Springs, CO, and Penny Lindsey (Keith), Columbia, SC.
Bill devoted his life to his wife, his children, 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and his sisters. Known as "Poppy", he was beloved by all for his kindness, selflessness, and zest for life. In addition to his family, he loved sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals' baseball team, University of Arkansas' Razorbacks teams, and NASCAR auto racing.
Bill was an outstanding combat veteran serving in the US Army for over 21 years, attaining the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He enlisted in 1949 at the age of 17 and rapidly earned promotions, making the rank of Master Sergeant by the time he was 20. He served with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division as a tank commander during the Korean War (1950-53). While in Korea, he was wounded twice and fought in the memorable battle of Pork Chop Hill. He also had the honor of driving General Douglas MacArthur during MacArthur's visits to Korea. Bill's decorations include two Bronze Stars for Valor, two Purple Hearts, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
After retiring from the military, Bill honorably served as a Deputy Sheriff for El Paso County in Colorado Springs during 1973-1992.
Bill will forever be remembered for being a terrific husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was an amazing person who loved his family, was a great friend to many, and kind to everyone.
A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, March 19, 2018, 1:30pm, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans organization.
