Hard to believe it's been four years since Dale's passing. We still miss him. I just learned of another great rancher conservationist in eastern Colorado, Chip Hines, who just passed away two days ago. They were both great mentors to rangeland conservationists like myself.

Dale embodied the noblest virtues and traditions of the American West, always understated and without pretension. Polite and rugged at the same time, he epitomized what this Easterner would call a real Mensch. Even though I knew him only a short time during our days at Princeton, our conversations were poignant in simplicity and memorably gripping. Dale was a friend then through thick and thin. He stands out in my mind even today after so many decades have passed. It was a blessed gift to have known him. Accept my condolences and comfort. He treasured his family as they adored him. May his memory be eternal.

I was shocked to learn of Dale's death from the CRMS bulletin. We were classmates there, and I have many fond memories of the Lasater family, of visiting the ranch, and being fascinated with
" The Lasater Philosophy of Cattle Raising." Dale was one of a kind! His sense of humor was unique. My deepest sympathy to the family for your profound loss.

Rest in peace my friend. We first met in 2010 in Spain on the Camino. We became really close friends over the last six years and I can't even tell how much respect I had for him.
Thank you for your friendship, the time on the Lasater Ranch, teaching me about life, cattle and how to ride horseback...I will miss you Tio! My deepest condolences to the family!

Dale was a brother in Christ to me. I deeply treasured his friendship, his counsel and the "Fellowship on the Prairie" we enjoyed during visits to Matheson, Albany and Dilia. I will keep the family in my prayers. I regularly tell people "many thanks". One of several things I picked up from Dale. He was a Blessing to my life.

My family would like to express their deepest condolence to the Lasater family on the recent tragic loss of their loved one, Dale. Father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, he is truly a gentle, genteel and Renaissance man. The use of is is not in error. While Dale may be gone from this earth physically, he will never be gone from the memories or hearts of the ones who loved him and had the pleasure to know him nor will he ever be gone from the presence of the Lord. He will be sorely missed in the days ahead but in our grief we can relate to and take consolation from King David's statement concerning the death of his son in II Samuel 12:23 , (someday) I shall go to him.

Dear Laurie, Lane, and Sally,
I don't know if you will remember me, but in 1956 when I was 16 years old, I spent a summer at your ranch helping your mother around the house and baby-sitting the younger children. I have fond memories of your family and daily picnics at the swimming hole.
I was deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of your brother, Dale. Also, when I did not see the names of Alan and Brian mentioned in the obituary, I did a Google search and was further saddened to learn of their deaths some years ago. I am so sorry for all of your losses.
I greatly admire all of Dale's accomplishments and contributions. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his wife, Janine, his family, and to all of you. I know he will be missed beyond words.
I have thought of you many times over the years. My thoughts and prayers are with you now.
Sincerely, Doris Linton Buckley

To the Lasater Family,
I had the privilege of knowing Dale and being on the ranch several times in my work capacity as a range conservationist. I will always remember Dale's smile and friendly demeanor. His knowledge of ecology, grazing principles, and ranching in sync with nature was enormous. Yet, he remained humble and was always willing to share that knowledge. I learned much from him during those visits. Several years ago Dale received the Colorado Section SRM Grazing Management award, a much-deserved acknowledgement of Dale's skills. Dale, we will miss you. Now Rest in Peace with our Lord and Savior.

I worked in the office at the ranch in the early 2000s, and have very fond memories of the ranch and Dale. I enjoyed our conversations at the large dining table and in the office, and will always remember his laugh and that twinkle in his eye. I am sending prayers for comfort and strength as you remember a life well lived.

What a devastating and tragic loss of quiet hero! Our thoughts and prayers are with Janine and the family. Dale & I were roommates at CRMS in 1957-58, and did not reconnect until 56 years later, when my wife and I visited with Dale and Janine at the ranch in Matheson. We toured the ranch, and then Dale hosted us and our grandchildren with a delicious beef lunch he had prepared. What a wonderful human being. His life and achievements touched so many. He will be sorely missed.

I was very sad to hear the news of Dale's passing. I first met Dale back in 2006 while visiting the ranch with my professional culinary arts students. I walked in the guest house and office and saw a picture of a Beefmaster bull and said out loud isn't that what Vories raised back in Glade Park in Grand Junction. Dale overheard me and said do you know Eugene? I had worked for a very dry summer month at Eugene Vories' ranch in glade park and I found out that Eugene had been the ranch manager at the Lasater Ranch many years ago. A few visits later I found out that Dale and me were fellow alumni from my high school Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale. I have visited the ranch on numerous occasions with my whole family. I have spent time with Tom and Alex and every member of the family has been generous hospitable and friendly. We've ridden his horses across his ranch and have felt the freedom and serenety that you experience on the short grass prairie.
Dale you were taken from us too early and we will miss you. You were way more than a rancher. You were an intellectual, a world traveler, a husband, a father and grandfather, a pioneer in sustainable grazing practices and someone deeply connected to his land.
RIP Dale you will be missed.

In a conversation I had with Dale years ago, when I was still doing occasional ranch hand work, he encouraged me to continue with school and develop some talents I was apparently blind to. I plan to graduate with a master's degree in a little more than a year and wish he could be around to hear that what he said made a difference.

To the Lasater family: I remember meeting Dale several years ago when I joined my son's students at the Colorado Culinary Academy in a visit to Falfurria. Patiently he explained the whole concept of producing beef using mainly the native range pastures. His knowledge was phenomenal. During the presentation and visit, he treated the students with his traditional respect. Afterwards, he invited us to an open-air barbecue, which helped us digest the ideas he had presented.
He was a skilled author and I have one of his books in my library. He was a gentleman to the core. My wife, Claire, and my son Andy and his family will carry with us fond memories of our several trips to the Lasater ranch.
We greatly admire what Dale did with his life. Our sympathy to all of his surviving relatives. His death is a tremendous loss.
Goodbye, Dale. We shall miss you.
