Dale Young Obituary

Dale Howard Young was born to George D Young and Lena (Elliot) Young on March 1, 1921 on the homestead near Arickaree, CO. Dale was the 3rd of 8 children. He left this life on May 9th, 2013 in Newton, KS. Dale moved with his parents and family to several different ranches before graduating from the Ellicott high school. After high school he continued ranching with his Dad, as well as other odd jobs. While working in the Burlington area he met and married Helen Jacober on June 20th, 1948 in Raton, New Mexico. Together, Dale and Helen had three children: Bruce, Gregg, and Steve. They spent their early years together living in or near Burlington, Stratton, Kutch, and Frisco, CO. In 1960, Dale started working for Harold Heyse operating a ranch near Hall Station, east of Rush, CO. In 1966, Mr. Heyse sold the ranch at Hall Station and purchased another ranch near Yoder, CO. Dale and Helen worked for Mr. Heyse on this ranch until 1973 when they purchased a portion of the ranch. Dale then worked at the Pikes Peak Coop in Calhan, CO while running his own cattle herd. They lived on the ranch until 2001, when they sold it and moved to Colorado Springs. During his lifetime they managed to move a total of 13 times and still be married for 64 years. While on the ranch near Yoder, Dale taught his sons how to care for livestock and work hard. Over the years, the boys learned how to milk cows, care for chickens, hogs, horses, and mainly cattle. Raising beef cattle was the thing that Dale loved to do most. Dale and Helen enjoyed events at the Holtwood Gun Club and playing at card parties with many different friends. Dale was very active in the Rush and Calhan communities. He volunteered to work admissions for several years at Miami-Yoder basketball games, he was a member of El Paso County Fair board, was active in St. Paul's Lutheran church and, along with Helen, a very active leader for the Prairie Pals 4-H club. Many family 'vacations' were going to some 4-H event across the state with one, two or all three of the boys. During his later years, M & M's were a staple item that remained near his heart; literally, in his left chest pocket which always made laundry interesting. Dale is preceded in death by his mother, father, and six siblings. He is survived by his wife, Helen of Colorado Springs, CO; brother, Richard Young of Simla, CO; son, Bruce; his wife, Kay; and their children, Amber and Bret Toews, all of Walton, KS, and Danielle and Ryan Still of Ellis, KS; son, Gregg & his wife, Sybille; and sons: Marc, Eric and Thomas, of all Geneva, Switzerland; and son, Steve & his wife, Kimberly of Holyoke, CO; and their children: Joshua , Kayla and Ben Kafka, all of Holyoke, CO; and Brittany and her fiancé, Brent Overmiller of Smith Center, KS; as well as many other nieces and nephews, other family members, and friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 25, 2013 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Calhan, CO. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calhan Fire Department.
