Dan Newman Obituary

Dan McDowell Newman passed away on September 12, 2014. He died after a battle with cancer while surrounded by family and friends. Dan was born in Dumas, Texas, on July 30, 1945, and grew up on the family ranch in Stratford, Texas. He is the son of Rollo and Virtena Newman and youngest of nine siblings. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 37 years, Monika Boger Newman of Miesau, Germany; his daughter-in-law, Lisa Boyd Newman and granddaughter Krya Renwick Newman of Fredricksburg, Virginia; his sisters Mattie Baskin, Kathryn Newman, and Pat Vigneau and brothers Lowell, Roy, and Bob Newman; brothers-in-law Juergen and Christian, and sister-in-law Bernadette of Germany; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of dear friends. Dan was predeceased by his parents, his sister Betty Jo Johnson, his brother Ned, and his son, Donald Newman.

Dan graduated from Stratford High School in 1963. He was a proud alumnus of Texas Tech University where he received a Bachelor's Degree in 1967 and his Master's Degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Arizona in 1970. In 1977, Dan met and married his soul mate, Monika. Dan had a remarkable career as a United States Army Finance Corps Officer serving this great nation for 23 years in diverse positions in Vietnam, Turkey, Europe and various US locations with a last assignment in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Dan retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Among other awards Dan was a recipient of the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Vietnam Service Medal. Upon retiring from the Army in 1992, Dan and Monika relocated from Virginia to Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In 1996 Dan began employment with Vinnell Corporation, an international private military company specializing in military training and logistics. He was part of the corporation's training efforts with the Saudi Arabian National Guard in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Upon his return to Colorado Springs in 1998, Dan began a successful career in a real estate representing Saddletree Homes and ultimately finished his career with Weichert, Realtors - Pikes Peak Group in 2013.

Dan was an avid hunter, skier, fisherman, motorcycle enthusiast, and a certified scuba diver. He was also a certified instructor for the National Rifle Association, teaching hunter and gun safety for the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Division. In addition, Dan founded Gun Training USA with his partner and friend, Lenny Piazza. He was a member of the Patriot Guard Riders supporting veteran burials, and helped establish a neighborhood watch team to prevent crime and vandalism. Dan remained a charter member of the Wye River Hunt Club at the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

In all walks of life, Dan was a mentor and friend to many. He enriched countless lives and was loved and admired by those who knew him. Dan will long be remembered by his family and his many friends for his warmth, his genuine smile and humor, his kindness and his generosity. He will be greatly missed.

Dn, I remember you wtih freat warmth from our days at 45th Finance in Germany. Your laid back demeanor and non-excitable approach to business stood out to me. Also, your trip to Greece on a motorcycle was something I had never imagined possible until you did it. Too bad I never made the efort in recent years to visit you in Colorado. Regrets. Tony

Every I spent with Dan was a good day. The last day we were trout fishing at the Air Force Academy, catching trout, eating great chicken salad sandwiches, drinking cold beer, and overhead, the Air Force Thunderbird Jets were practicing. I looked at Dan and said, "Who in the w hole world, has a better fishing hole than us today?" No one did.

As a young "LT" in Germany, Dan was an instant friend and mentor I looked up to. Although our paths never touched after that, we remained in touch for years. My regret, and one many of us share, is that I failed to renew our friendship during several trips to Colorado to see one of our sons.

He told me once he felt for the longest time, things were not quite right... and one day he realized the wind wasn't blowing where he lived like it had been almost all the time where he grew up as a kid in Texas. He also told me he was a teenager before he realized "colbeer" was actually two words.

I miss spending time with Dan. The last I saw him we were fishing in a trout pond that actually had trout in it, which we were catching, the Air Force Thunderbirds were screaming by 400' overhead at speeds that could catch the pilot's hair on fire, we had cold beers in the cooler, great chicken salad sandwiches to munch on, and each other's tall stories to laugh at. Dan's stories were much better than mine.

Dan, 5 years have passed and I still miss the funny jokes, the warm smile and the friendship. I miss the dinners with Monika, you and Ted and all the fun we would have when we got together.
Life is just so different without having your terrific sense of humor, knowledge and patience. I so admired you and your military service to our country. Peace be with you always.
Your friend,
Tricia Sexton

Lieutenant Colonel Dan Newman was the best boss I had in the military. He lent me his mess dress uniform for my wedding and stood in for my wife's father to give her away. This says alot about the high caliber of man Dan Newman was. We are extremely saddened to hear of his passing. God bless him and family.

Such great memories from times sitting around the table at holiday meals. Times spent hearing the stories and witty banter between Uncle Dan and the other great men of the family.
He was very more supportive and influential while I was deployed and on Active Duty. He always had an encouraging word. We will miss our Uncle Dan.
